You can run a engine on pooh

pooh into bio digester, bio digester makes methane, compress methane into CNG and you can run an engine off CNG.

So apart from peanuts and st what other odd stuff can you run an internal combustion engine on.

Hydrogen seems a sensible way forward if we get on top of electricity generation, but transport and storage are problematical and it it's likely to be safer and more efficient in a fuel cell powered electric car.

A few councils have capped waste tips and are using the methane produced to power vehicles.

I used to run my old ZX on sunflower oil, the problem with biofuels though is we're heading towards a global food crisis so taking up land that could grow food to grow fuel seems a little silly. Some countries are heavily in to it though, Brazil is very in to bio fuels.

Ok, so it's still a fossil fuel - but perhaps there is more coal than oil left?

Incidentally, when I lived in Johannesburg I ran my car almost exclusively on this stuff - and it's good.
