Although this is my first post, I've come to understand that people don't like "What Car" threads, so I do apologize but my options are very slim at the minute. So far my cheapest quote has been £4500 on a 1.0 Volkswagen Lupo. All of my friends have been in similar situations and have suggested classic car insurance. So after a few emails to Footman James who have said they will insure me on anything over 20 years old and in insurance group 1 - 8, I was wondering what the best car in this bracket I could buy. However, if it's going to be a classic I would prefer something fun, with a bit of "go".

I am only 17 and only a student so if i can keep quotes below £2500, I would be seriously happy. Thanks for the help

Haha yeah sorry forgot to mention that, budget of £1000 for the car. Possibly stretching to £1250.

Jeepers, 4.5k to insure a poxy lupo. I would get a push bike if i were you.

20 year old cars would be the ones I first looked at as a new driver.

At the time I bought a citroen AX 1.1, it was a great first car - pretty swift for a 1.1, but I cant image there are many left, they were made of tinfoil

also looked at Fiat uno, VW polo (breadvan style) - fail with regards being fun

How about an original beetle? or Alfasud or even Hillman Imp(not sure where that came from, but I am on pain meds for a back back!), you can probably learn a bit of car fettling too.

slightly left field option, 2CV although you may struggle to find one in budget

Oh and early MX5s would be within the timeframe now

With respect, it's a st idea running a car when it's going to cost 4.5K to insure it...

As a student, are there not better things you could be doing wink

in all fairness, you've got to start building your no-claims some how....! remember though, OP, if you get an old car, it may cost you just as much in maintenance than the extra insurance....just bear that in mind.

over £4 for a 1.0 lupo is silly money i'll admit. i'd just get a bloody bike for now, not what you want to hear i know!

Start when you are 25. What on earth do you need a car for at college or uni. Go and drink beer and have sex. If you get a car you will just end up watching everyone else doing that, whilst you stay sober and run every body home... Haha.. Sap...

It's easy to see why so many people put themselves down as named drivers on their parents policy when insurance is that ridiculous. Even if you get a massive fine you'll still be better off.

hehe i'm a student (in my last year) and have owned my E21 since before having started, it has taken a fair amount of time and money but hasn't stopped my social life. i'm lucky enough to have had a well paid job all summer long though. whilst some were enjoying a 3-4 month summer break, i was working 50 hours a week at £9.80 an hour. it didn't bother me, because i love my cars, and i love being able to drive where i want, when i want to, without having to rely on scabby public transport.

no, i'm not a snob hehe

This this this. Cheapest thing for me to insure on a normal policy, I imagine it'll be silly cheap on a classic one. Can't imagine they have all that much 'go' though (nor will most old hatches!)...

My (17 yo) daughter pays £1300 to insure her little Toyota Yaris. I realise it'll be different (more expensive) for a bloke to insure but they do seem to be one of the cheaper cars to get cover for. It may be due to their complete lack of street cred, but when the alternative is the bus they suddenly look ok...

That's fine if you can find the elusive pre-1991 models.

Admittedly it was 10 years ago when I bought my first car insurance but some weird and lesser known cars were unusually cheap to insure. I remember a mid 80s (4th gen?) Celica was cheaper to insure than a basic fiesta. Look for something querky that very few people in your age group go for and you could get an insurance bargin. Also it was only 50 notes back then to add me on the insurance for a V8 defender. Old LabdRovers can be very cheap to insure easy to work on if they break, possibly try NFU insurance quotes on them. Good luck.

Have a look at bigger cars for example a Mondeo as you may have to try the stuff that is not popular with fellow yoofs. smile

Morris minor is a good call, lots that cost £1,000 and rwd so you can learn how to go sideways round roundabouts. hehe

Fiat Panda 1.0, cheapest car to insure. Modest power, excellent handling and no chav appeal.
