So my local Volvo dealer called me to ask if I was attending their VIP event at the weekend.

Obviously it's designed to sell me a new car, but is it worth attending for sts and giggles?

I have a vision of a couple of salesmen pushing me into a sale and giving me a glass of stty (probably non-alchoholic) wine and a thousand sales brochures....

Has anyone been invited to one of these before, did you go, was it worth it???

I get these quite often. Haven't been to one for a few years (last time it was for a car I actually wanted to buy) they are as you suggest, go if it's something you want to see, otherwise time better spent elsewhere.

Go for the free food and sometimes there are some Z list celebs and various freebees. Many moons ago at a Seat event they had Tiff Needel there, although the food was rubbish wink

There wasn't a hard sell but I suspect that varies from dealer to dealer.

My girlfriend is a profession musician and played (the harp) at the launch of a prestigious Japanese hybrid recently in Nottingham.

She basically said the the car was unveiled with a lot of pomp and ceremony, the invited guests had some canapes and the odd glass of bubbly, looked round the car and that was about it.

She did get given a free funky goodie bag though.

I suppose if you've got nothing planned it'd be worth attending... but from her description I wouldn't miss a good night down the pub for it!

i went along to the BMW event many moons ago when the 1 series first came out, at rockingham, was a good day out, the BMW dealer laid transport on, got there, and basically spent most of the day driving bmw's around, i drove the 130i around some country roads, (let on the loose on my own, was just given a laminated map), also around the circuit. Then i went around the skid pan in a Mini cooper S works, and finally around an offroad course in an X5.

All in all, a good day out....but i didn't have any intention in buying a car.

Yes, those events are often worth going to, but the OP is referring to a showroom based cloth getting dragged off an s60 by the sounds of it. Rather watch grass growing personally.

If it's a T5 and they let me take it for a thrash drive and give me my lunch then I'd be happy I guess!!

Enjoy by all means but, having done at least 30k miles in V70 and S60 T5s they are without doubt the most uninteresting performance car I've ever driven.

Me too. I got called by the local Mercedes dealer "to confirm my place at the new E Class launch".

I asked if I'd be able to drive and they said that wouldn't be possible, but then seemed shocked when I asked why they imagined that I would want to spend an evening standing in a car showroom.

So I went, it was basically a one to one with a salesman that asked you what you wanted and tried to sell it to you with a few crisps and snacks on the side! frown

However their deals were pretty flipping amazing in fairness and I may have been drawn in hook line and sinker, luckily I had the good sense to say I'll think about it and call you tomorrow!!!

Although there is a good chance I will have a different car tomorrow! rolleyes

Accompanied my dad to the VIP launch of the new Transit at Frews of Perth in 1986.

They put on a pseudo tv quiz show with the teams led by Dickie Davies and Lenny Bennett (remember him?).

Quite a laugh actually - but when it came to browsing I only had eyes for the white Tickford Capri in the car showroom.

The launch of the Vantage was pretty good, at an RAF base with a Harrier performing for us, worth going just to watch it in action.

Invited to Vauxhall VIP event at Archie Moss in Loughborough. It's 60 miles from our house so phoned up to see if they had a decent deal on an Insignia. Screen price retail on the internet £10980. PX value of £1k for our banger. Deal to me was £9980. Screen price minus PX. That was it. Nothing more. Basically what man on the street would have got. They said it was already discounted although not mentioned on their website.

Absolute bullst.

I went along to a Mercedes Benz event at Gloucester airport recently and it was very pleasant way to spend an evening. Imagine a dozen of the most expensive Mercs including SLS & AMG variants and a quiet runway.

After 3 hours of running the cars up an down the runway 3 of the cars were out of petrol, the SLS gearbox had overheated, a SL63 + C63 and E63 all needed new tyres so had to be retired early.

It worked well, the sales guys did a good job and managed to sell maybe a few cars. One chap spent 3minutes in a E63 came back an told the dealer principle that so long as e changed the tyres and fluid and gave the car a clean he would pick it up on Monday (event was on a thursday).

We went to an Audi one. They literally tried forcing us to buy a particular car. We told them it was over budget and not what we wanted and that we didn't want finance either. He then did a finance quote even though we didn't want it and expected us to say "ok then, we'll have it". We kept saying it didn't have the spec we wanted and it was too expensive. In the end we just said no, we don't want it, and they got really funny and complained that we were wasting their time!!

Unbelievable. Wouldn't go back there again. Funny thing is, we have bought two cars from them in the past. Won't deal with them anymore. Definitely not worth going!

If it was an Inchcape VIP event they are designed to sell cars and are in no way connected to the launch of a new vehicle - to be fair the deals on offer are usually pretty strong and if you're in the market for a new vehicle they can work well for the customer
