Hi

I'm looking to get a cheap car to use to build up my NCB even further (5 years onwards).

I am looking at Aygos and cars in that class.

What could I get with:

5 doors (as these cars have small boots it is easier to put shopping on the back seats with dedicated doors)
1 litre
50 (even 60?) mpg +
5 years old maximum

For £5000 second hand?

Thanks for any suggestions

Actually I looked at the new Micra, but it does 42mpg and 0-60mph in 18 seconds (for a car that slow I expect better mpg).

Ignore the 5 year old rule and buy a Mk4 Golf 1.9 Tdi.

A friend bought one as a station car for about £2,000 - interior is standing up well, no squeaks or rattles, 145k on the clock, still looks smart enough, goes alright with the 130bhp motor, does 50mpg. I borrowed it last weekend and for a £2k car, liked it a lot.

Ooooops, didn't see the 1.0 litre engine thing. Oh well, ignore me.

ford ka. Even when it does go wrong, its the world's easiest 'modern' car to work on. When I have a garage shuffle in a few years time I'm going to get one as my commuter.

There's a load of Suzuki Alto's (in pensioner specific colours) to go at, guessing they might come in the 'in that class' thing

Guess the other option would be a Hayabusa Mini

K12 Micra. I have a K11 and it's a great wee car. If you can live with the looks, I'm led to believe the K12 is even better thumbup

Outgoing model Kia Picanto. Spanking new or pre-registered depending on stock. I paid £5500 in March and if anyone's got them left they're bound to be desperate to get rid now.

Failing that, Peugeot 107s are only about £5600 or something like that.
