A quick run down.

  • O/H has a Fiat 500 which she loves.
  • We are picking up our new Discovery in a couple of weeks
  • We are also expecting baby number 1
  • Trade in value will clear finance, and make no real impact on price paid for the Land Rover
  • Fiat 500 is no use for baby transport
  • Finance payments on Fiat are pretty insignificant
  • Neither of us need a car for work
Basically - is it worth trading it in, knowing that in a couple of years time the O/H will probably want another car and a bit more independence? Would we be better to just hang on to it, even if is isn't used while we are still travelling like a mobilised army with the little one? Will it be worth keeping if only for those 'just popping to the shop' times when the thirsty Landy might be better left at home?

What would you do?

Where's your option for sell privately?
Be realistic in pricing it, and if no joy after a while, see if you can get a dealer to take it or sell on your behalf.
Get valuation from www.freecarvaluation.co.uk who also buy cars.
Prices seem fair unlike that other one that advertises on TV, and sponsor motoring on Dave channel, who offer half the book price.

These baby things must be MASSIVE if they won't fit in a fiat 500

Keep it one car and mrs at home with a baby could be very very lonely. That and unless you work from home you could be constantly fielding calls to come home to take the baby to the doctors etc.

No criticism intended towards the OP, but when I was young our family of five fitted inside an Austin Mini. Nowadays it seems like as soon as a couple find out they are expecting they rush out to buy the biggest beast of a car that they can afford biggrin

Once you have children, you will change that opinion!

Surely the OH will still need a car? Just one child seat could easily be left permanently in the Fiat so the wife can use it to go to the shops etc just in case?

I would keep it, you will be glad you did!
If for any reason my missus can't get out of the house with my young lad she starts to crack up.
She is always taking him out to play places, various groups and having coffee with her pals etc.
We would definitly struggle with just one vehicle.

It's more a practicality thing, rather than size. Oh and I agree with the small car thing too - my parents had a couple of mini's too when I was a kid. Truth is I always wanted a Discovery and this is the perfect excuse. smile

It's the baby seat (rear facing for a new born) etc that takes up the room.

You went out and ordered a discovery when you found out baby number one was on his way?

That is just flat-out wrong.

When son-of-bikemonster arrived, the "big car" in our household was a Pug 206 GTi. Like most 2 doors, the doors are mahoosive, and the front seat slides forward on its runners when folded forward, which made it very easy to move the monsterlet in, and indeed "oiut", of the car.

You really can survive with a kid and a small car.

I'm sure you can - and many do, but that's not really the point of the thread.

Pffft.

Expecting a thread to stay on point?

You've been around here long enough to know better.

(Acshly, I meant to add something in my post to the effect that you should buy WTF you want. And indeed, the issue of the plausibility of a small person in a small car is irrelevant.)

Keep it for when the OH crashes the Land Rover on the school run.
