Right. Can anyone talk me through this?

I've heard words banded about about retentions (must mean something COMPLETELY different to the context it's used in as a medical student) and such like.

Can it all be done via post? Or do I need to visit a DVLA office?

Can be done by post but is so much easier/quicker to do it at your local office

When you buy the rights to use a plate, you will get a retention certificate, you will need to either send or take it to your local DVLA office, with your V5, MOT (if applicable) Insurance cert and the relevant forms, they will then take all your paperwork and give you a new MOT with the new number, new tax disc and a letter that allows you to get a new set of number plates made.

You will get your updated V5 in the post in a week or twos time after reciving the new tax disc / MOT cert

I tend to visit the DVLA office, as that way its easier to ensure that all the paperwork is correct.

Okies. So what happens about insurance?

I guess I buy the car, insure on it's current number plate and then notify them of a change? Does that count as a modification to the vehicle? Are they going to up my premium because of it, basically?

And what if I get a tug after that? Will they send an amended cover note through? Will they update the details on MID automatically?

No increase in premium, though they may possibly charge an admin fee.

Insurance is as you say, notify them of changes it will not effect your premium. Best to go to local DVLA a lot easier than doing it by post. It will cost £105 pounds to put the plate on retention (which is a certificate saying the plate belongs to you) then it is free when you come to put it on a vehicle.Hope that helps

If you buy through a dealer they should do all the paperwork for you.
Check prices at different dealers, they may sell the same plate for different prices.

Ah right, so literally they'll send all the paperwork through / new tax disc / mot cert etc...? Any reccomendations?

I didn't need an MOT, I think they sent the disc through & a set of plates. All I had to do was ring ins co & fit the new plates on.
If I remember it was the Private plate company I used, though google will throw up loads of dealers. (there are a few on PH, Mr Reg springs to mind)

So what happens at MOT time then? Presumably nothing?

So long as your vanity plate is on the car at the time of MOT that's what will appear on the certificate.
Mr Reg http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/profile.asp?h... can probably give you more information.

But it doesn't matter than the previous MOT is with the old reg? Will the old MOT still be valid?

Apologies for hi-jacking the thread, but I`m in the process of selling one of my plates which is currently on retention certificate.

I am planning to meet the chap at a DVLA office to swap it over, but there`s nothing obvious as to how to do it!

What`s the procedure for this? Do I just have to add him as a nominee, which presumably would then be sent back to me, and then I can post it onto him and he can use it to put onto his car then?
Cheers
