What’s the most outrageous price for a part anyone’s come across of recent when purchasing something for their car?
I was asked to get a replacement drivers door mirror glass for a friends Mercedes C270 which had an option code of 249 ~ inside/outside mirror automatic dimming. The retail price for a replacement mirror glass from Mercedes is £303 plus vat bringing it to a grand total of £363.60. Then there’s still the cost of paying someone to fit it if you’re not confident enough to do it yourself.
Who in their right mind would spend that much on a mirror glass? I don’t care if the mirror glass is an all singing/dancing mirror that automatically dims at night when the headlights blind you from behind – you could buy a cheap 2nd hand car for that price !
I purchased a mirror glass from eurocarparts for this car for just over £40 – it fitted perfectly & had the heated element as well. It just doesn’t dim at night but who cares – my mates now got £320 left to go down the pub & buy me a pint for saving him a load of money!
Anyone else come across some stupid prices for parts of recent?

I had an aluminium a/c pipe fracture on my Saab c900 that was several hundred pounds to replace! Fortunately my indy sourced a pattern part...

Worst I had was the inlet manifold splitting on the 330d, £410 from the dealers and no pattern parts available.

Thankfully easy enough to change myself.

When i worked in parts at vauxhall, someone phoned to get a price for a fuel pump. Cant remember the car but it was something mundane and run of the mill. Even i was embarraced to quote the price.

Ok, so it wasn't as fancy, but when my Bravo had the wing mirror smashed, it was 12 quid for a replacement and fitting was free (I did it). £363.60 is mental for what you're getting!

Just remembered: when I bought my Eunos it had a recent receipt for a complete exhaust system including cat and downpipe for nearly £1500. It replaced an s/s sports exhaust that was perfectly legal and had passed previous MOTs!

Fully built up cylinder head for a 365 California . . . .not going to put the cost on here, but I've paid less for an entire 3.2 mondial!

Lots of examples of people searching for conkers wins by buying up rare parts (Dino keyrings in the orignial packaging for £6-800, clock tags for £2-300, 250 toolkits for $10k)

10 quid for the green window glass clip thingy on my 306. You might think 10 quid isn't outrageous but the part itself cannot be more than 1pennys worth of crappy , badly molded green plastic.

Almost £500 to replace a 6" piece of water pipe on my 87 Celica (this would have been in 92ish so it really did hurt!)

To repair this common fault they had to remove the manifold - and it cracked so I had to pay to have that replaced as well...

Dealers eh?

I luckily haven't had to buy too many parts from manufacturers or dealers (Dad is an automotive lecturer so most things are bought via trade prices), but I did pay £25 for an exhaust gasket for my Integra; I thought that was a bit steep.

Not my car but I had to get a price for a Techart Cayenne rear bumper once.

The price was staggering (2 parts coming to over £2K before painting) - but nice bit was that the guy knew the exact car I was calling about before I said anything smile

Remember about 15 years ago we sold 2 x Pinanfarina badges (SP?) for a 406 coupe.

About £70 quid from memory.

Wait till I have a beer and the part no will come back to me. wink

IIRC I paid something like £25 for two '172 Cup' badges for doors of a Clio I owned. Ridiculous.

Peugeots can be quite nasty on parts, they wanted £170 for a coolant hose that goes from the rad to the block on a 205 td!
