Maybe a forlorn hope but here goes!

We're looking to replace our current two cars, one of the replacements is going to be an MPV, so yawn.

However, we have a bit of scope for the second car, it will need to have four seats and be under £8k and fairly sensible:

a) Needs to be reliable
b) Fairly economical, 35 MPG+

Other than that, anything goes, any ideas people?

I'd like something that's a bit of fun without being too brutal as my partner will be driving it as well, I don't want her ending up in a hedge!

smile

A late E46 BMW 330d or E39 BMW 530d would suit perfectly.

Mk5 Golf GTI? I doubt you'll average 35+ mpg in one but you won't be that far off.

35mpg on a run or mixed driving. An Impreza WRX (with the Prodrive Performance Pack) will return 35 on a run. Sure, maybe the image won't suit, but you won't find much else as much fun wink

You're pushing it a bit with an £8k Cerbera so two MX5s.

How on earth do you need an MPV and a sensible economical car? So much sleep

Five kids, so we need a 7 seater but can get by with just a 4 seater most of the time as not all kids are at home most of the time.

Both cars would be used on an almost daily basis, so a Cerbera probably isn't very sensible, although I would love one!

Why a diesel. They cost a lot when they break. No point unless your are north of 15K miles per year I reckon. Get something that sounds good, it will make you smile wink

The OP wants a car with 35mpg or more, ok a 525 or 530 petrol would do 35mpg, i only suggested a diesel as there is probably more to choose from and will serve the same purpose as a petrol equivalent engine but do 45 mpg.

Like you say depending on mileage (sub 15k) then a petrol would be more fun.

V70 T5 - if you're feather foot fred, you ought to get 35mpg.

I use my Stag everyday smile and yes it does still have the original Triumph engine. smile For me, it IS a sensible car, so perhaps our idea of "sensible" is different. So long as you keep on top of maintenance there is NO reason a well sorted £8K Stag won't be reliable. I did say forget the MPG to be fair wink Why does it make a difference whether or not your partner will be driving it? Theres nothing embarrassing about driving a Stag, they get lots of admiring glances, even mine, in Russet Brown! biggrin

Stags are great and seat four adults in comfort, you can get the roof down in the summer and the hard tops are great for the winter and don't really rattle.

Whilst I would agree there are better weekend cars - hence me having a couple of others - MGB GT V8 (great car but not suitable for someone who needs to seat more than two) and a Triumph Vitesse. I don't think much would beat a Stag for a fun weekday car.

I will admit I'm after a cheap BGT (probably) for over the worse bits of the winter to keep road salt off the Stag.

yes and well under 8k. I chopped in my 330ci for an st220 and actually prefer it to drive. Not due to performance although it is a touch faster. Just feels more fun and sporty than you'd ever expect a mondeo to be and always makes me smile.
But it won't do 35MPG will it. Perhaps on a long run, but in day to day driving your looking at 25-30MPG.
