Image versus Performance ?

What would you choose ?
Tidy but plain eight year old Skoda Octavia with Audi S4 running gear and about 350 bhp or a brand new Audi A3 2.0T S-Line, no cash alternative ?
Interested in what motivates us to be car enthusiasts, not saying either is better or worse but I really dont care about the badge if I am enjoying myself and really like the idea of Sleepers, plainer the better. Not into automotive bling at all but will alwasy take the driving experience before looks.
I know you can do both, but which is your priority ?

1. Does an Octavia use the same Torsen AWD system as the S4 or is the Haldex based AWD system as used on the R32 Golf?
2. Is an 8 year old Octavia really worth the same as a brand new 2.0T Audi A3?????
3. Image? Which ones meant to have the better image???
Out of those 2, which ever will be worth the most tomorrow. Sell it and buy something else.

The assumption is that a Octavia is fitted with S4 running gear so the way i read it is you have a Audi S4 running gear hidden under a Skoda or you have a Audi which is lower specification but has a newer number plate and THE badge.
Id take the Octavia as i'm quite partial to the 20vt 4x4s so a 2.7Bi turbo one would be a great sleeper.

Also, isn't this NOT about image or performance, but more money and age?
If you want to know about image, then you'd need a much more even money vs age vs intended use.
If you want a new car, then no matter how good the Skoda is, it won't be the choice. Performance might be enough to sway some, but ultimately no.
If you don't want a new car, or a hatchback. Then no matter how crappy the alternative is, you'd not likely ever pick the Audi.

Er, not sure, probably the TT vs GTR thing, think there are various types of petrolhead/car enthusiast, most people like cars more than they do their fridge, but some tend to focus on what the car can do rather than how it makes them look, I am not that bothered about image as long as it goes well but can appreciate some are the other way around or somewhere in between due to lots of different variables. For me I am married and not "On the pull", not looking for status from a car, I dont feel the need to compete with the neighbours and wider community (as I will lose, badly And I bet I know what/who prompted you to start this thread

If you have a look at my car(s) present and past you'll gather that image means nothing to me. Performance is by far out of reach at the moment. But fun and handling all the way
Out of the two choices I'd probably pick the Skoda for insurance reasons, Audi and VW seem to be more for insurance compared to their SEAT and Skoda counterparts.

But using your example, why not actually then buy an Audi S4 anyhow... one would be in scope. Possibly one with over 500hp if you wanted and still cheaper then the A3.

Its not deciding which has a better image, just where peoples respective priorites lie, no cash alternative, you get to choose one or the other and you dont get to sell it the following day, slightly polar opposites in terms of looks perhaps, not really, both modern-ish hatchbacks, just one is a bit plainer and a generation or two older, plus a couple of rungs down the VAG brand tree.

But that's largely due to seeing no redeeming features of the A3. A budget Audi IMO does not make for a flashy image, and it's just a Golf in drag.
Plus I don't really like the look of regular hatches, the Ocatvia is a far more hansom beasty.
Would want it looking like this though:
Audi - but not for the Image.
Audi because time at the side of the road is money. Audi because time spent underneath the car at weekends is time not with the kids. Audi, because I suspect motorway is better suited to it than the proposed Skoda.
