Insurance - how long to decide fault?
Discussion
Had a small prang a couple of months back. I'm fully comp so all paid for by the insured until they have established fault, which is in dispute.
No injuries, very minor damage to both cars (about the value of my excess to mine). It's been a couple of months now since i sent them the info they asked for, so I would have thought i would have heard one way or another by now.
This is the first claim i've made in 20+ years of driving so no experience of such things. Is it normal for it to drag on like this?

I had a prang in the snow last December (hit head on by a pick up truck who lost control coming the other way) . The other driver accepted full responsibility, was fully insured and played everything by the book.
My insurance company paid out within 4 weeks (the car was a write off) but it took until last month for the claim to be closed formally.
Just the way it is, I'm afraid.

It depends on how quickly the insurance companies get their finger out.
Someone pulled out of a side road and went into the side of my car in June 2005. They disputed liability for the next five months until giving in. That wasn't the end of it though - the third party insurers were still arguing over hire car charges (two weeks with a Vauxhall Aglia) until the following March, despite returning my excess a few weeks after the third party admitted liability.
Last summer I got hit by someone who subsequently decided not to stop. He was fully insured and after three months of him and his insurers sticking their fingers in their ears and denying all knowledge of the collision, I received my excess back within two weeks of my insurer serving court papers on the other driver.

I ran into the back of somebody at a junction last February (nothing more than a couple of dents - I thought he'd gone and was looking to right
). Open and shut, my fault entirely. My insurance company wrote to me a week or so later confirming this. Thought it would be cleared up very quickly and had "call insurance to confirm" on my todo list. Got a threatening letter from some scumbag car hire place a couple of weeks ago telling me I was liable for £1500 of hire charges which I passed to my insurers - so I guess the answer is "longer than you would expect"...
