Looking at a new set of tyres for my Reliant Scimitar SS1 (185/60 R14), looking for the best grip I can get, the car will only be used in dry conditions. Been looking at R888's and AO48's, all other suggestions would be great, not looking to spend massive amounts.

Thanks

What about Proxes or FK452s? Won't bankrupt you and both great tyres.

Quite a rare size these days though!! Must still do them as 80s/90s golfs, xr3 and vauxhalls used that size.

Ha ha, I put that in as more of a retro tyre for the car.
I had a set on my nova and I quite liked them - that was almost 20 years ago though!

You want a Michelin or a Dunlop full dry rally tyre to remain road legal. Their grip is phenominal, even when compared to an A038 or 888 style trackday tyre ..... Then again, so is their cost, noise and wear rate.

888's are great on the road in my experience. I used the SG compound on my E30 track car and decided to keep the track wheels on after the annihilated my road tyres in comparison.

They're cagey in the wet though so you'd best be prepared if you get caught in the rain.

How about MaxSport RB5 tarmac rally tyres?

ACB10s are not available in 14" accroding to the website but even if they are and are too extreme (they are crossplies so you may need to change your car set-up) then try Kumho Ecsta V70A in K20/K21 (soft) compound - available in 185/55VR14. These are the current list 1B tyre of choice for the hillclimb/sprint crowd - I run them on my Caterham. You might get a couple of thousand miles out of them depending on how hard you use them :-)

They still wont be worn down to the treadwear indicators... biggrin

Indysport are better than Maxsport in my opinion, but that sort of tyre wont really suit road driving. Theyre better used where you need performance and theyll be driven hard and used quickly - then, against 888s and similar, they provide much of the performance for less money.

Read a forum post where a guy has got 8000 miles out of a set of the RB5 mediums, with a track day in there too. People say they're noisy but noise isn't really a problem as i'm running bike carbs so I have a lot of noise anyway. Im just aiming for the best cornering I can get for a low price and atm they seem to be the best around.

Look at both manufacturers then. Id also look at Federal as their '888-type' tyre seems quite impressive both performance and price-wise.

If its the 595 RS-R then they don't do my size unfortunately as I thought they looked pretty damn good too.

185/55/14 in FTZ Type RR. They list it as a trackday tyre.

Or some Kumho KU36s. Slightly less grip, but they offer a bit more progression and can be used in the wet - should you ever get caught out in the rain on a hoon, which is unlikely given how predictable our weather is biggrin

I have a set for my Evo as they are much cheaper than 48s and 888s

Another cheaper alternative (although prices seem to vary wildly) to 888s would be some Federal 595RS. I've no experience of these though as I opted for the Kumhos.

Not sure if it's road legal, but i wouldn't want to be spending an extra £50 per corner compared to the RB5, just don't think it would be worth it.
