Hi guys

Currently running around in a 2003 late model e39 530d m spec (remapped!)
Have an SL R129 and Speed 6 Cerbera as toys

Been hankering after an M5 so...........

Do I get a nice E39 for around 9-10K

Or

Save a but harder and get an early E60 V10?

Views and reasons please!!

Well going by your profile you seem to rather like the e39 and only fault it for it's power. A remap is not the solution... the 5.0 V8 is. smile

Seeing as you already have two toys, the E39 is a better everyday proposition than the E60.

You can get a very decent, low mileage E39 for around half the price of an E60, too.

Do you prefer Manual or the SMG Auto?

E39 I'd say... cheaper for a well looked after one, and less to lose in depreciation subsequently!

Only buy an E60 if you can afford to get one with bmw warranty.

I have been considering the E60 myself of late. I love the Scoob but on a long trip last month it was far too hard and loud, maybe i am getting old??! The only alternative i have seen that ticks the performance, style and comfort boxes is the M5.
Why is a warranty essential, does it have common issues then??

no major known issues, but the problem is these are hellishly complicated cars and dealers dont repair, they throw (expensive) parts at an issue...

Quite an interesting buyers guide to all M5 models in this weeks Autocar. Their M 'expert' would buy an E39 but not an M60 yet as there is " too much money still to lose on one and too much potential for faults down the line".

That kind of problem did cross my mind when considering it, its a rather special engine and most grease monkeys around where i live may never even have seen one close up never mind tinkered with one.

That looks like one of those kids build your own kit but without the plastic frame holding it all together, great picture though!

Not an M3? I looked at a few myself. But then I find the M5 a bit big as a country lane blaster (but then that could be just perception never having driven one).

Anyway, don't be stupid man wink

This is going to sound strange coming from an Impreza owner but i really don't like the stigma attached to the M3. I know of a number of M3 owners and only one was an ok bloke, all the others were meatheads and roiders, the kind of blokes that hit the girlfriend, are too loud in pubs and like to pick fights with people they either know they can beat or are out numbered by their meathead friends. The M3 is a great car by all accounts and i really would like to give one a test drive but where i live at least, it represents the type of person i despise.

Yes, that does sound funny, however, I do get you. yes

I think about chopping the Scooby in loads, however, I can never bring myself to do it.
