Well, Mrs DT wants a Zafira *sigh* but I have always had a hankering for a 525/528 Sport E39 vintage, now it's head over heart in this matter but I have just come into a little money and feel now is a time I can afford to buy (& hopefully run) one.

What are they like to live with, they all appear to have approx 110k miles, is manual better than Auto (I'm not worried either way) to live with, fuel economy etc...

I'm basically after some real time info on them, i'm on the verge of calling a guy selling one on Autotader who is 113 miles from me so I need to convince myself it's the right thing to do for a bit of fun.

The one in question is a V plate, M Sport in dark blue with cream leather, manual, 108k with history and MOT & Tax for 2kish.

(I'm in Sussex if anyone knows of one closer?)

Lovely cars to own - I had a 528i (not m sport) which was lovely and smooth although fuel consumption was pretty poor. My memory is pretty hazy but I believe the 525,528,530 share the same engine and have almost identical MPG so try and get a 530 if you can as that has the grunt to back up the low MPG.

They are very well made and suffer from a few common faults such as dead pixels - buy on condition not on mileage.

Enjoy thumbup

Thats always good to hear, I am still trying to justify it in my head but ATEOTD it's not something I can afford to buy every day and could probably not loose much if any on the the right car if I sell in 12 months.

We have 1 offspring with another on the way but also have a diesel estate car for the kids so this is 'Daddys car' haha!

You are 100% correct.

I owned an E39 and to this day I believe it was the best all round car I had ever owned in my entire life.

God bless the E39! Now you have me looking at the E39s again!

The press universally loved them and rated them as best all round car in world- esp 528.
Not owned one but trouble is for used ones i do keep hearing the words "complex" and "very expensive" cropping up.

Different engines. The more recent 325i and 330i are both 3.0s.

Perhaps it was the 3 series of that vintage then - I know it's one of them smile

That was my one fear but i'm not to bad with a spanner/hammer and have access to a workshop in emergency's.

It's not going to accumulate massive milleage as it's a second car to the TDi estate and I have a bike for nicer days like today.

{I'm still working on the Head vs Heart thingy, can't you tell?)

Absolutely superb cars (look at 'my garage' and behold my fondness for them!). I liked the auto much more than the manual in the E39 but both are good.

Weakest parts are the radiator and cooling system. Have a look for receipts, they all pretty much need them at c.100k.

This from memory as I've had all 3 variants:

525 - better than most people say but only just about acceptable for spirited driving

528 - masterpiece despite only having a few more bhp than the 525 (which replaced it I think). More torque and sounded better to my ear

530 - terrific motor (c.231 bhp I think) and easier to use than the 528 but not, imo, a great deal faster.

MPG, from memory, was about 26/38 (very urban to motorway at 80 ish)

Go ahead and buy. As others have said, buy on quality, not mileage.

Also, on a 'Sport', make sure it says so on the V5 - lots of clones with std SE interiors and bolted on bumpers...

They are lovely cars, I have a 528i se steptronic... definitely suits the car over the manual. They are expensive to run, fuel consumption is 23 mpg average over 3 years for me. Long run 35+ mpg, around town 24-27. Consumables are not so bad, GFS and Eurocarts is your freind. They enjoy throwing £300 bills here and there. You WILL need to replace the cooling system if it hasn't already been done (£500) It WILL break. Dead pixels on dash, common issue, £80 fix. Suspension is likely tired if it's on the original. £92 to fill up, I get 340 miles approx to a tank currently. Don't worry about mileage, it's just a number and means nothing.
