Over the past couple of months, my Dad and I have been fishing at a place near Stoke probably about 5 or 6 times.

Every time we've driven down, be it Saturday or Sunday, we have passed 5 silver E90 60-plate Tourings going the other way through Buxton in convoy. We always see them at the same time, and there is only ever one person in each car.

Anyone have any idea what they are for/doing?

These are not the BMW's you're looking for.

I think I saw these in Derby a couple of months ago - must admit I did think it looked a little suspicious.

I know those cars! I can't say anything more than they are driving in convoy for some testing unfortunately!

Hmmm, a load of silver BMWs one after another? Sounds like every road, everywhere in the UK to me.

You mean you know exactly why but you're not allowed to say?

Would a PM be out of the question? I'm very curious and I'd like to be able to tell my Old Man I've solved the mystery smile

Don't tell half a tale Browno! If it's so secret you can't say then you shouldn't have acknowledged knowing anything! I didn't really care, but even I'm curious now!

There have been similar convoys of cars, and even vans at one time, over the past 30 or so years - I believe they are test drivers from Michelin in Stoke doing high mileage tests.

This. Are you absolutely sure you didn't just see some traffic?

while living in the US I saw convoys of Crown Vic's and Lincoln Town cars being used for tyre testing. They looked rather battle scarred and it wasn;t unknown to find one inspecting the roadside scenery

I may be joining the crazy gang. But I saw 5 silver tourings clearly in convoy when I was out towards lady bower. I was coming from calver. I thought it strange, but thought people would think me odd if I mentioned it.....

In the mid to late seventies I spent a lot of time on the M6 between Wigan and Carlisle and often passed three white vehicles in convoy, all with steel wheels without hubcaps and the tyres "quartered" with painted lines and codes of some description in each quarter. They were obviously from a tyre manufacturer and I always wondered which. They included Bedford CF vans, Checker saloons, Ford LTD or similar and Vauxhall Victors.

I never saw them stopped at the services so never got to ask what they were doing.
