I know have have started a couple of threads like this lately, but this should be the last

Ive just looked at a Seat with the 130 bhp Tdi Pdi engine. These engines are very good arent they? Its done 120k, with full service history. Is there any reason why this shouldt go on for another 50k miles or more without any major problems?

Thay can take their miles cant they? There seems to be a lot of mk4 golfs with with a lot higher mileage on them

Any advice would be appreciated

The PD 130 Is widely regarded asthe pick of the PD range of engines, some people even prefer them over the later 2.0 16v TDi lumps fitted to the mk5

As long as its been serviced correctly using the correct PD Specific oil then i can see no reason why it wont do another 100k let alone 50k

Ive had a PD115, 130 and 150 and to be fair i liked the 130 best out of the 3, it also doesnt suffer from the cam issues that the 150 does

As far as I can tell, 100k is just run in. My neighbour did 130k in about 3 years and the car still drove like new.......

They are very good.

Just keep the oil changes regular with proper spec oil and also ensure cambelt is changed with the tensioners and water pump.
Um about it they just run and run.

My Passat PD130 is just on 120000 miles now and still feels as good as the day I got it.

Regular oil changes, don't abuse it cold (as anything else) just generally look after it. It is commonplace for them to get to 300000 miles without any major issues.

Make sure the cambelt (and water pump) has been done too, every 60000 miles for these engines.

I've seen countless taxis with well over 300k miles and plenty of taxi drivers buy them with 200k and they run and run.

Last one I had was on 167k with fsh but was a horrible noisy rough engine that vibrated through the car, with a narrow power band, Old 4 cyl VAG engines are horrible old things, but durable.

Looking for a daily and a VAG tdi 130 is high up the list. I had this engine in an Audi A6 years back. It's a bit gruff, not as progressive as BMW / modern diesels and completely dead when off boost, but does deems a good mix of economy, reliability and performance.

As others have said, oil changes and important as is the belts and pump every 60k.

i have a 53 golf pd100 now on 120k and have had since 80k - it doesn't feel any different today. Still smooth and has decent overtaking punch, i can imagine a PD130 would be even better. Fairly narrow power band, but i quite like that - something different and you can make decent progress if you get it right (for a normal motor that does 50-55mpg on all +15 mile journeys).

keep the servicing + mechanical sympathy up and the engine should be no bother, but bushes and suspension will start to need refreshing 120 - 150k +.

also, 120k is nothing:

400k tdi (prob not PD on a 2001, not sure).

I'd like to replace mine and get something else more interesting, but we only need one car at the moment and it's been good to us - regularly do a 520 mile round trip in relatively cheap cost and comfort.

Need to add to this thread the VAG 1.8 turbo petrol 180 bhp is highly durable and will do 300k miles plus. Again it needs regular servicing but do that and it will keep serving you like a workhorse.

I've had an A4 PD130 for a good few months now, bought on 127k. They will go to well over double and even triple that. A friends T reg passat is on 210k with no problems.

125k miles up on the A4 and it never misses a beat. Had it nearly 5 years and bought it with just over 50k miles and apart from routine servicing / maintenance I have no cause to complain. Just changed the cambelt for the second time (make sure it's done every 60k miles). Regularly gets over 55mpg and 700 miles to a tank on a run.

I keep toying with the idea of selling up just for the change and after reading the 'bargain barge' threads has whet my appetite for something else (I really don't need a diesel if I'm honest) but somehow think I'd regret letting the old girl go.

We have two 2003 130TDI Passat Sport Estates, 127k and 165k miles.

I regularly get 55mpg, the 130 is quick enough and the estate is a decent size too. We have 3 car seats across the rear seat as well!

Thoroughly recommended, regular (long life) service means between 14k and 20k miles, belts and water pumps at 60k miles.

Like others here, I have been tempted to change for something newer, but can't bring myself to sell such a reliable, nippy, workhorse.

Book values them at £2.5k and £3k, I don't think I would sell either even if offered £4.5k, so I guess that is a pretty good advert?!

Great cars.

The 1.9 engine is a great lump, mine ran to 175k before I got shut, but from about 130k onwards it took alot of funds to keep it going, and that was with a full VW history, service every 10k.

Beware you'll get a few telling you that they've got one that has 300k on it, and all they've done is wash it every Sunday. For every one of them, factor in 100 others, who've had to spent alot to keep them running. For the record, you will most likely have to replace, generally, fuel pumps/injectors/turbos/injector wiring looms/camshafts, (all engines not just 150's)/followers, maf's. Massive, and v. expensive problems with the Mk IV cooling fans, if you're in that model year, all usually fail, which can lead to problems with the air con compressor too.

Yes, good engines, but they don't run to high mileages on magic dust alone, like all modern turbo diesels, they can, and generally do, cost you alot to get there.

I "know" three cars with these engines in them.

2 have been unbelievably reliable, just normal servicing and they are on big big miles.

The third completely **** the bed, no hint anything was going wrong, serviced properly, just one day cruising up the motorway a conrod let go and that was it.

Same as any engine, its how it has been treated that matters.
