This isn't a "my car's for sale" whoring thread, more an appeal for some words of wisdom as I've pondering this for the past few days. Situation is... the other half has a 147,000 miles 2003 Audi A4 2.5TDi (2wd) saloon which is pretty base spec (no cruise, leather etc) that she adores.

However... in th past year it's covered around 1,500 miles as she's been driving my car mostly (or indeed, not driving) and for the past 6 weeks it's been parked up declared SORN. We've hummed and hawed over selling it in lieu of something else (unsure what yet) so over the past week I've attened to a few issues - replaced the rear discs and pads, all the filters, sorted a few wee niggles and retaxed it.

Now, the issue is given it's age, mileage and general condition (I'd say average) and given the fact it's lacking service history over the past 60,000 miles, is due a timing belt kit soon (circa £400?) and could definately use four new tyres ahead of winter (circa £300?) I'm guessing in it's current state, we'd be aiming for around the £3,000 mark - perhaps less given the work it needs soon.

So, we're in the situation where the car isn't desperately needed however it's good to have a second car especially as we're moving and the school walk has become a school drive. Plus, it'll still happily return mid forties on a run and is big, safe and keeps Jordan's alter ego happy as she admires her refection in shops windows. Granted, we'd be better with a smaller, cheaper to run car for running around in but part of me can't decide if I should cut my losses with the A4 and get what I can or, spend a few quid and run it knowing that it's big, solid, safe and she's happy.

I know it's difficult thing to answer, but given the current climate and the fact cars of this ilk seem to have dropped in desirabilty and thus value of late, I'm not sure if it's at the stage where it's worth so little that it's simply not worth selling and I should spend a few quid and keep it. On a side note, I've currently got a 2.5 diesel Volvo so two "similar" cars... and both equally good and equally crap! Granted mine is an old workhorse, but it's done admirably well so that also makes it harder to decide. Perhaps keep it for winter hacking duties, cut my losses with the Audi and then pool the cash and buy something better/newer (thinking B7 A4 1.9/2.0TDi or a V50 D5) for her to run daily/nicer brat cart/bit of bling (in an Argos kind of way)

Apologies for waffling, thoughts are appreciated...

Cheers
