After spending Sunday at Porsche with many of you guys I spent Sunday night browsing the classifieds.

After moving on to a few specialist dealers I thought I'd crush my dream to own one after my R32 in three years time and popped onto a comparison site.

£50 more puts me in a 996TT!

How can such a super car, and indeed supercar, be only slightly more to insure than a slow premium hatchback and for 30k so many well kept one are out there to choose from.

I'm 33 with a clean licence but I was expecting £2000+ at least! 911s may be the people's sportscar after all.

I would imagine that if you have to even consider worrying about insurance premiums, the running costs and potential failure costs would be beyond you?

I too am inspired after Sunday and browsed 911's in the classifieds.

Within reason insurance looks to depend more on your history, age and location. Insurance on a Golf GTi, 330 convertible and an M3 convertible were all very similar for me when i was looking about.

I hear what you're saying, but I baulk at the thought of forking out so much for something like insurance. I'd rather fork out £x on a service/set-up/upgraded parts rather than insurance, for which I'm hopefully never going to see the benefit.

Just to make you cry, im 19, did an insurance quote (at my current age) on a Noble M12, £900. Now just to save for the car..
Lets hope they dont update their database anytime soon.

wrt you age, after a point the risk becomes the same until you become elderly where the risk goes back up

the difference here is the number of claims they receive from R32 owners/drivers compared to 911 turbo drivers - looks like the VW is a higher risk car

It is, indeed, silly. I can insure a 530i for £450ish, but if I wanted to insure a 1.8 Rover, it's well over a grand. Or indeed a 316i is heftier on insurance.

I'll buy you the car if we can swap our ages! I'd love to be 19 again!

I would suggest that, as a percentage, fewer people crash their Porches.
Perhaps when the Porsches do crash the payout is less.
Maybe Porches tend to hit trees and hatchbacks hit other cars and cause whiplash injuries.

At it's simplest level the insurance is based on;
1.Cost to replace/repair insured car.
2.Cost to replace/repair what the insured car crashed into.
3.Likelihood of the driver crashing.

1. 10 year old porches costs the same as 2 year old hatchback.
2. With cars being so easy to right off these days then a porches crashing into a car is just as likely to write it off as a golf crashing into the same car.
3. Porsche driver might drive more carefully because they love their car.

I suspect that's because they don't get many claims on a Noble then?? That's madness, and I bet it's similar to (or even cheaper than) what you would pay to insure a Fiesta or similar... And was it Fully comp?

Also the chance that a higher proportion of R32s are stolen?

It is also because of the way the premiums are calculated which can work in you favour if younger, i.e. insurance computer says that higher propertion of claims for R32s are for a certain age range, whereas for the Porsche there aren't that many.

Wasn't there a recent spate of R32's being nicked using cloned/OEM supplied keys or similar?

once you get above the evo, scooby, m3, top level gti fwd cars insurance on most performance cars gets quite reasonable to what we are used to paying. Not to mention the cost of such cars, tvrs porsche's noble's at the bottom end of this market the cars are 20k ish with 50k car running costs thus putting off younger drivers until they are further on in their career and older. I'd hazard a bet that most tvr porsche noble drivers had an accident/claim on an evo scooby m3 type car on their way up the "car chain". By the time they have got a bit further on in their career and able to afford the car they are older have had an accident beow the age of 21 or 25 and are in the next insurance bracket and classed as less risk. Thats my take on it anyway.

Not quite cheaper than a fiesta. My Focus is £740 per year and my mates 1.2 ibiza would be £600 a year, all fully comp.
The other bargain is the original RS4, 380bhp, bi turbo, at £1500.
Cheap quotes are there, if people are prepared to shop around.

And no, no swapping ages smile

Therein lies the answer, I think. I was playing around on confused.com and got quoted twice as much to insure a £3k E36 BMW M3 as I was to insure a £60k 195mph Ferrari 512TR.
