Apologies for the ‘what car’ thread but, as above, I’m after a quick, good handling estate for around £3.5k. I initially was looking at Saab 95 aeros as they are certainly quick but I am concerned about the handling.

I do about 8000 miles a year so economy isn’t a massive problem though 80% of my driving is urban. Insurance isn’t too much of an issue as I’m 33 with 10 years plus NCB. I still get silly quotes of £1000 for a Subaru Imprezza sportwagon though.

I don’t mind going under budget and spending the rest on making the car handle so that’s an option.

I’m hoping to stimulate some debate here, brainstorm some alternatives and clarify my thinking – over to you!

Check different variations/ages of Impreza. I'm paying less than £1k for a WRX saloon with another 23 year old as a named driver.

Why brave? Great cars, I have had two and had no real problems with either

If handling is your main concern then

Mondeo ST220 Estate

BME E46 325i Touring

Can't really think of anyhting else in that price range TBH that handles well and wont have been to the moon and back. Would expect the insurance on these 2 to be significantly cheaper than the Impreza also.

Did you pay < £3.5K for them though? Big bills if they go wrong...

OP says "silly insurance quotes for Impreza"

would the Audi S4 not be "silly quotes" too?

MG ZT-T 190? I don't think a 260 is in that price range, but if it is...

MG ZT-T 190, you should get a facelifted 2004/5 for a lot less than that! Handles really well and sounds good.

Is the V6 MG the one you have to be careful of the Cambelt? As it's a very complex/expensive job to do?

ST220 is on a chain which is appealing (provided it's had regular oil changes)

Not as well built, quick, practical, or good a handler as the ST220 though.

Won't comment on the styling as that is a matter of personal preference...

Yes it is an expensive job. The majority of them should have had them done by now.
Appreciate the ST220 may be better. I like the rarity of the MG.

I agree, just buy this and cross your fingers biggrin

Is it just me or does that C43 badge look like it's been stuck on by a 5 year old?

Rarity...

Is that not just a way of saying they weren't very popular and sold in small numbers?
