Am I right in saying these engines share ancestry ? if so what are the major differences, I cant imagine there is much shared between a 1994 Volvo T5 and a 2011 Focus RS.

The original Volvo t5 is a 2.3 based on the 2.0 the 20v inline 5. The volvo 5cylinder is a modular design and is the same as the 4cylinder found in the s40 and the 6 cylinder found in the 900series. The 5 utilised Porsche expertise in the design and engineering. The lumps in the focuses are 2.5 litres based on the 2.5 20v Volvo lump (also used in later Volvo models too) all are essentially the same in that the block and head are the same. The later models use fly by wire throttles and different ancillaries and cams and various other details etc but for the most part they are the same engine. I favour the 2.0based 2.3 t5 for it smaller pistons and they tend to be more willing to rev - hard to believe the engine was essentially developed on the late eighties. The give away is it's mediocre fuel consumption and co2 figures - great engines, sound wonderful, very tough, tuneable and pretty powerful. Realistically it is essentially a Volvo engine not a ford
