Young Persons Car Insurance.
Discussion
This has probably been asked several times, but as quotes and costs change with the weather, I thought I would ask again.............
........Does anybody know or can reccomend and decent broker / Ins company for 17 (18 in Dec) with a prov license with a good chance of passing in the new year.
All I'm after for him is a cheap Fiat / Ford / Vauxhall, 1.1ish valued around £800. Downside (for ins purposes) is we live Surrey / London borders.
I'm happy to look at car sharing - and selling my own - so he can be a named driver.
At the moment on comparison sites I can't get below £3k, and my driving record is unblemished.
HELP!!!!!

you'll normally find that it will be cheaper for him to be insured as a provisional licence holder than a driver with a full licence. I guess the thinking is that theres a responsible driver who has to acompany him while hes on a provisional.
Just bear that in mind and get quotes for him on a provisional & a full licence for cars you are researching.
Stay away from the typical 1st cars - corsa / fiesta / Clio etc as lots of teens crash them so premiums can be higher. Example - i was uninsurable on a Corsa at 18 but i got insured on a mondeo no problem. Then I got insured on my current car (V6 Audi A4) for 1k and a Corsa is roughly the same price!
Put him as the main driver (if he is going to be the main driver) then add yourself and other other older / experienced drivers with decent driving history and it can reduce premiums
If there is a low number of anual miles - 5k? it will be cheaper than one with 20k
I have found the value of the car wont affect the premium too much. Its more to do with miles per year / engine size / postcode & age of drivers.
Play around with the voluntary excess. Higher tends to mean less on the premium. For my 1st car we put an excess of £1000 on it even though it ws worth £300. The thinking being if a repair was going to cost more than the car is worth we would scrap / break the car ourselves rather than go through the insurance. Of course if you run into an expensive car you will have a hefty bill.... but its the risk you run.
Thats all i can think of right now.

The older the car is the cheaper the insurance.
German and Jap cars will be expensive.
Voluntary excess is not worth it.
Comprehensive is not worth it unless it is cheaper than TPFT.
Annual miles make little difference.
Some cars are crashed a lot and have premiums weighted to reflect that. Cars with premiums that are weighted are the exception, not the norm. Just look out for and avoid them.
There, that's my knowledge on the subject.
