Don't hog the middle lane
Discussion
In my experience I can't help sitting in the middle lane these days. The left-hand lane is usually full of lorries with no more than 20-30 metres gap so it makes sense to sit in the middle lane
ETA:
Aside from the huge cost, what would the implications of a 4th lane be specifically for lorries? A lot of traffic clusters I see are caused by an overtaking lorry, effectively blocking 2 lanes of traffic and causing people to move into the fast lane, causing a tailback of cars. As above on the majority of motorways I drive the inside lane is chock full of lorries, effectively leaving 2 lanes of freely moving traffic rather than 3.

First and foremost there is no "Fast lane"! Its 70MPH in all of the lanes (apart from where variable speedlimits are in place). ETA:

I can see your thinking in terms of H/LGV specific lane 1 but what about vehicles entering and exiting the M way?
Ultimately lane hogging is down to a combination of lazyness and fear. Some drivers can't be arsed with the whole business of driving correctly and some IMO belive that the middle lane is the safest lane to be in (less chance off being rear ended by those big scary lorrys).
If correct lane disciplin were taught/enforced I belive it would reduce congestion on M ways dramatically. But how many commercial learner cars do we all see merrily lane hogging!

kers!
Where've you been hiding? Those messages have been in use for years.
kers!Discussed on here before. I recall one of our resident plod pulling someone for sitting in lane three on an empty motorway at 60mph. Said he moved over to lane three because the sign said Don't hog the middle lane...

king stupid!Highways Agency Man is, effectively, saying that the Great British Public is stupid, a statement with which I generally agree. I wish there was some way of promoting a "keep left and drive sensibly (you idiots)" campaign but that would have to involve car drivers as well as lorry drivers, which simply wont work.
I've spent over 30 years avoiding the temptation of overtaking on the nearside but in the past few months have felt my resolve weaken to the point of actually contemplating it!

I've noticed an increase in the use of flashing headlights to get people to move over. This was common 35 years ago but I don't recall seeing it for many years until recently!
Still doesn't
work all the time.God know's what it's going to be like when we do have a legal 80 limit.
They need to do a TV ad campaign. run it during Coronation street and Emerdale. I think I am right in saying (I am far to young to have seen one) that when the motorway was first introduced there were public service announcements on TV on how to drive correctly this included keeping left.
Run these again please shiny faced man.
