Main dealer. Car booked in for minor service and MOT at 8.30 am sharp. Assured 2 hours max so i elected to wait. I'm still here waiting and having just enquired as to 'how we're getting on'... the service is just done and the car is now sat in the empty MOT bay awaiting inspection. And has been for 20 minutes ffs.

The coffee is st as well. And breathe.

Point 1: I was told it would be less than two hours. No courtesy car available so thought I'd avail myself of a mug of coffee and free wifi to crack on with some work.
Point 2: My work VPN wouldn't work through the dealer wifi, so I ended up surfing the net all morning.

I've never had to have my car serviced at a garage before. Go to your local parts place get filters and oil and do it yourself in about twenty minutes. No faffing about, no crap coffee and you'll save a few quid in the process.

Also as a bonus next time someone moans about how long it takes for their cars to get serviced you can be a smug git about it. wink

I'd have waited 2 hours form our last house. 40 minute drive each way - what's the point in going home.

Dealers do just lie about how long anything takes in my experience. (Actually I'm being harsh - it's not that they lie, it's just that they don't include the mechanics coffee break, finding the keys, finding the valater, getting it washed etc).

Actually I rang around 4 dealers for prices before going with these as they were the cheapest (as usual) plus they also gave me extra discount for being a regular customer - we have two vehicles we service with them. They are usually very good to be fair but they've recently been bought out by another franchise... hopefully this is just a blip.

When it's under three years old and still in warranty I choose to take it to a main dealer for the history/corrosion warranty etc. Plus it wasn't exactly expensive - 180 all in including its first MOT and a couple of niggles sorting.

I've had to put with this kind of thing recently, slightly worse actually as I said "my wife HAS to have the car back for 3pm because she needs to collect the children from school". On arrival they had just taken the under tray off the car, 3 hours after it was dropped off for a ball joint. That was our local, and newly built, halfords service centre. A very professional outfit tbh - but no, they are 5h1T3

My car's been in the main dealer since Monday evening for a new exhaust manifold gasket .... First they had to order the gasket (overnight for Weds a.m.), although they already knew that's what needed changing, then they broke one of the manifold studs and needed to order one of those too (overnight for today a.m.).

I just called them and it's still not finished - more than 2 1/2 days later. The twunts.

when ive booked in at a dealer i arrange a time when they have a courtesy car available, even if you dont have anywhere to go sure you can find some country roads to rag it around while you wait wink

That's where your time went. On the niggles. It's worthwhile getting a dealer stamp in the book on a newer car because trade in and second hand values are dependant on it. £180 invested now could be the difference of up to £1000 (depending on the car) when you decide to sell. So think of it as you've just earned £250 per hour for looking at a Zoe McConnel poster. wink

I've been caught a couple of times with very long "while you wait" sessions. It's certainly frustrating!

I always get the main dealer to provide a courtesy car.
Or, as I have a spare car, I'll have them collect it and return when they're done.

No help at all to the OP right no, but it could be worth asking for a similar service next time.

Why do you use a main dealer?

I use a main dealer because every year or so when I check the prices of the services the main dealer works out only £25ish more expensive.
It's worth that much to me for the convenience of the courtesy car/collection.
Also the uninterrupted main dealer service stamps on the service book (and in the dealer system) will make it easier to sell the car, and probably make it worth a few hundred more when it comes to selling it.

I don't use a main dealer for my 15 year old hilux though. smile

Yes... I can see how a fuse replacement and straightening the steering wheel takes 2.5 hours... wink
