This will test you !!

I might be spending a couple of months down in Spain beginning of next year and thought of driving down there but need an econimical car to make it viable. I've got some clasic insurance to use up. Needs to be some sort of fun element and a convertible would be a plus.

Now I know they didn't make a diesel MX5 so what else would fit the bill.

Oh yeah, to make it even harder - not more than 1500 quid !! wink

I think I'm right in saying that the first mass produced convertible diesel that wasn't some sort of jeep was the Audi A4 cabrio.
They might be nudging 10 years old now, but will be more than £1500 I expect.

Sporty Diesel Convertible Classic... I can only see one combination of even three of those that works, otherwise it's a question of "pick any two".

As above, you'll have to ditch the diesel requirement if you want a convertible.
Also, IMO, you'll have to ditch the diesel if you want anything fun at that price level.

Erm... MX5 does seem the most likely outcome at the moment.

I'm sure someone from Practical Classics made an MGB with a diesel engine? Probably some sort of boat anchor. In fact, scratch that, it's not going to be sporty is it...

Good god, I feel ashamed that I even made the suggestion now.

I think it's still in beta testing.

Who are Alpha? tongue out

Anyway, only the current Spider has been available as a diesel, and no-one who's ever driven one of them could possibly call it "sporty".

My Dad owned a very rare 80's Citroen Visa Diesel convertible for a while recently.

Amazingly, it sold.

Not overly sporty though...

Yep.
I mentioned it above.

Not sports, but the 2.4 turbo and moderate size make it a pleasant tourer.

I'd be quite happy to drive mine that distance.

Suzuki Cappucino will give you low 40's mpg on a run.

You'd need to have the grit and determination of a World War 1 fighter pilot though.

Is a Smart Roadster old enough for classic insurance yet? And no I know it doesn't really meet the letter of the requirements, but it sort of meets the general gist. Maybe not for 1500 quid though, I don't know.
