"Obscure" cars you wouldn't expect a 20 year old to drive.
Discussion
Hi, long time lurker but don't post much on here.
Basically as a 20 year old male car insurance is a b
h, I've tried getting quotes on standard first cars like corsas, kas, clios etc with the results being £2.5k+ a year. I know this is fairly decent for someone my age but some people seem to get it much cheaper.
I've read alot that trying cars you wouldn't expect someone my age to drive could save quite a bit on insurance as obviously not as many 80's jags are crashed by 20 year olds as corsas.
Also I'd much rather drive something older and cooler with a bit of character than a newer "eurobox." I've tried a few like an 89 Jag and Vauxhall Omega and get quite simillar quotes to the "normal" first cars. Can anyone suggest any obscure cars for me to get quotes on that are also a bit PH?
I've had a quote for a mid 70's beetle for about 1.5k which is tempting, but I think as a first car I'd like something I could buy in decent condition for not much money (£1k or less) that would have less trouble keeping up with modern traffic. Not saying I want a rocketship for a first car but a Beetle would be too slow I think, I'd rather have a decent daily and then eventually something like a beetle for a project.
Thanks for looking.

Classics and kits are likely to be your best bet insurance tbh.Basically as a 20 year old male car insurance is a b

And all are usually good for tuning, but you might not get a speed machine straight off.
Sadly £1k isn't a huge amount of cash these days, but I'm sure there must be something.
Maybe a Morris Minor or a Triumph Herald. Not speedy stock, but both have potential and IMO are far more interesting than something like a Corsa.
Stuff I've seen the students around here driving. Moggies, Heralds, Spitfires and an A35 in a fetching shade of dark almond. MGB's and midgets are popular too. All of them say it's to do with cheaper insurance and getting to fix it yourself, or get your dad to help when you get stuck which is cheap too.
Volvo 340
Volvo 740
Sierra 1.8
Cavalier/Ascona/manta series
or obvious ones like Polo /Golf but they did an economy model one these CLE think it was called, low power and high geared (they were very slow to get upto speed but ok once you got them wound up)
Polo 1.2E breadvan (this was an economy model must be low ins group)
Golf 1.3 CL

I always read these posts of people my age moaning about insurance quotes being £2k-£2.5k.
I am 21 now, and this is my insurance price history.
17 - Clio 1.2 £1,200
18 - Golf 1.4 £900
20 - A3 2.0 £600
21 - A3 1.8T £600
Do you have NCB?
Have you added others to your policy? Adding the GF and the mum reduces my premium by 40%...
