Next GT500 Mustang To Get 5.8-litre V8
Larger-displacement mill for next-gen uber-Mustang
The next Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will get a 5.8-litre supercharged V8, it's been revealed, as the 2013 mustang (we presume this is American model years, meaning we'll see the car in 2012)
An agreement between the United Auto Workers union and Ford to invest $50 million in the Blue Oval's Romeo engine assembly plan specifies that the factory will build a 5.8-litre supercharged V8 for the next GT500.
Unfortunately, there's no further detail - and nothing about what sort of power we can expect from the car, but we can safely assume that it'll be somewhere in the ball park of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which arrives next year with 580bhp under its bonnet (sorry, hood).

Is it just me, or is anybody else thinking...that engine might be nice in something else, like an ultima, ginetta, and so on.
I guess it depends on how much it weighs compared to the more common GM LS engines. And whether Ford will sell it as a crate engine, of course. bakerstreet said:

Bigger engine = more power, more sound too i presume. Sounds good to me
Seconded
2013 model was also rumoured to have IRS too.
Would be great to see RHD over here though...
It is also rumoured to be gaining a smaller turbo engine, maybe even a four cylinder as the Mustang II gets fondly remembered.
What you can count on is that the car will be officially launched on April 17th 2014, the 50th anniversary of the debut of the original 1964 Mustang to a massive publicity drive...unless the old Mustang sales drop off a cliff.

Well, you can buy the new high revving Boss 302 engine directly from Ford Racing, probably a brilliant motor for a light car, it weighs 444 lbs or 201 kilos.

The 5.8 liter is rumoured to have 600+hp...
It'll have to be quite good to keep up with this:

The Mustang is due a restyle, mainly to see it through to it's 2014 MY all-new replacement. The ugly butt end looks like it will be restled into a vertical plane again and the front end will gain a more GT500 face, all designed to re-establish the Mustang in the sales charts before the IRS 2014 MY model arrives (usually in 2013 but see below about the 50th anniversary)) on a different, rumoured to be smaller, platform. If smaller, it might be "the time" to make it a world model as in this day and age, it makes little sense not to.

I'm sorry but I really like the current rear end, I think it's MUCH better than the previous squared off one, only liked by die-hard Mustang fans as opposed to everyone else. If they change back I just can't help but scream PORSCHE!It is also rumoured to be gaining a smaller turbo engine, maybe even a four cylinder as the Mustang II gets fondly remembered.

I'm moving over to Texas at the end of the year, I'm seriously in the market for a Mustang GT Premium, I had a brand new 2010 Mustang Premium when I was working in San Antonio, TX last year and loved it. Depending on how the change the rear end back to the squared off shape it may put me off entirely, perhaps to a Camaro or a Challenger.
I'd have preferred the better handling Mustang but hey, they're all modern V8 muscle cars

About 335lbs for an LS2 crate engine including the manifold, coil packs, fuel rails, throttle body and exhaust manifolds - all for around $5500.
I think the beauty of the GM unit is that because it's pushrod, it's very compact.
