700hp+ Confirmed For Next Ferrari 599

Ferrari boss makes snippets about new 599 and Enzo - 'official'

We've been speculating for ages that the 2012 Ferrari 599 replacement would crack 700hp from its updated V12, and make greater use of aluminium in the quest to save weight. Now we're feeling like proper smarty-pants, because Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa has just confirmed 'on the record' to US magazine Car & Driver that it's all true.

Felisa also talked briefly to C&D about the Enzo replacement due to be launched next year, as per the corporate product strategy revealed to investors recently. Unsurprisingly perhaps, Felisa says this car will feature carbonfibre-heavy (light, surely...) construction, and hybrid technology to back up its mid-mounted V12 configuration.

The other snippet C&D feels is interesting enough to share concerns Ferrari's plans to filter the new Enzo's hybrid technology onto more mainstream models.

Don't expect a simple F1 KERS-type system, says the Ferrari Grand Fromage, because the production technology 'would have to provide efficiency gains and not just extra performance.'

Maybe, though I am not convinced that supplementing a big petrol engine with an extra flywheel or electric motor is the way forward.

I would buy a supercar to enjoy the power, noise and general experience, not to save fuel. When the crude runs out Hybrid technology will be useless. Investing in alternative fuels and engine technology, to my eyes at least, seems far more productive.

I can understand my comment may have been a little bit OTT though.

It's a car being produced now. Making it hydrogen powered would be a bit impractical, given that there's only one hydrogen fuel station in the country. Plus hydrogen is heinously inefficient an heinously expensive to produce.

Even once crude runs out (which of course it wont, it'll just go up in price), there's no reason that one shouldn't hybridise whatever replaces it. My money is on hydrogen/plug-in electric hybrids at the moment, although I'll probably change my mind again in a few days' time. smile

Since we wont run out of crude, though, I can't see any need for cars of this nature (and price) to switch to anything else.

Fair point, though Hybrid's have been on the public market for almost 15 years now and the technology doesn't appear to have improved much, for them to be a viable product they need to do more.

Last month I drove two Hybrids, both Honda Jazz's (11 plate and 61 Plate).I felt that they were un-refined and I managed with normal driving to reach only 48mpg (not the claimed 60-something, bearing in mind this was on the 11 plate which had covered 5000 miles so was definitely run-in).

Working out the extra cost of a hybrid against the savings in fuel (at the manufacturers claims), you would have to cover considerable mileage per year to just break even). And by that time you would probably need new batteries..

It's an easy bandwagon for a car company to jump on though the technology doesn't seem to get any better.

I do agree that the current systems are a bit, well, rubbish.

Having said that the gen-3 Prius has had very positive reviews.

They do, I bought 1kg of parmesan once and it was a very small wedge of an almost barrel size cheese.

No No No its not a hybrid

Its KERS which is totally different

KERS is a system that allows energy to be recovered under braking allowing the car to accelerate faster and use less fuel then it would if it was using the engine only. This is fitted to F1 cars and it is cool

Hybrid is a system that allows energy to be recovered under braking allowing the car to accelerate faster and use less fuel then it would if it was using the engine only. This is fitted to the Prius and it is uncool

See totally and utterly different

Thank God for that, up until now I have been too embarrassed to buy a 599 due to it`s pathetic power! :-)

But the article says:

Felisa says this car will feature carbonfibre-heavy (light, surely...) construction, and *hybrid* technology

and then later....

"Don't expect a simple F1 KERS-type system"

I was just going on what the article said. ;-)

I agree it would be better with Kers :-)

They had better have done something about the chassis on the new car as the current

599 I drove had great difficulty putting down the power it has now even on dry

roads the traction control and skid police were on almost constantly. It felt

edgy, skittish and not very safe to be honest.

Grazie mille. Io non parlo molto italiano ma so uno scontro culturale, quando l'ho letto.
