Hi, i've done it twice. Once in 2008 when it was originally called the Scumball Rally and again in 2009 when the name changed. My first effort was in my trusty mk3 Astra, had a cracking time driving through France, Luxemburg, Germany, Holland and Belguim. We had a night n France, a night at the ring in Germany followed by a lap or two teh following morning and then a night in Amsterdam.

I think my highlight of it all though is meeting so many nice people, some of which i remain in contact with now.

2009 we hit only France and Spain but that was purely down to the distance and drive time through France and to Barcalona and back. We used an old Vaux Omega MV6 estate that year. A cracking car purchased for just under the £500 limit in true ex police spec....... i.e a lot of trim missing with next to no luxeries. She was big, she wallowed into and through corners but quick and spacious. We would have had more room had we not got snobby and wanted to use the load cover, lol.

I would do it again every year if i could afford it but we reckon you spend a minimum of £600-£800 per person dependant on the work you need to carry out on the car as well as all fees, fuel, food and most importantly beer. This was worked on three people sharing the costs.

I think my next one will be either Czechwrecks or the bugger that goes to Croatia as i fancy a more distant drive.

Ive done Scumball3000 twice: 2007 & 2008. It cost us £150ea in '07 (without camping) but every year it gets a little dearer - Ed is now asking £250 per person with a minimum of two people per team. 2007 was excellent, 2008 wasnt as good for me and I missed it in 2009.

Im tempted, but its too dear for me right now. I entered a Porsche 944 in '07 and a Skoda Felicia in '08 (because the 944 had had an electrical turn). Newcomers tend to go for old barges or scraggy funeral cars. Personally Id only consider a car thatd had a lot of work done and care taken over it (cars have to cost <£500, but after purchase you can spend as much as you like on them), rather than the taking a complete banger route.

Simon (GC8) I heard you were banned from the event when you turned up in that Skoda having only raised £70 out of the mandatory £500 minimum?. The price has gone up a little but then the destinations and private coaches now laid on make it still the most popular on the net. The route was to Prague last year and rumour has it additional days are planned for the next run. Some of the others I've done are a little cheaper but none as well run or value for money, Ed & Chris are both heavily involved in Goodwood motorsport events so it's no wonder they're event is slick.
I watched you on TV the other night Simon getting that donut wrong , always makes me laugh!. Think you would have enjoyed last year mate, they raised another £80k for charity and 90% of the route was on de-restricted autobahn.

I'd recommend Scumrun to anyone, it's value for money and the routes are always different, with additional days being added it's only going to get bigger. It still sells out early on and don't forget Gumball tried to shut them down for being a possible threat!. My only advice would be to select the car wisely and something over 2litre as anything less and you will get bored (like Simon found out in the skoda ;-( )

Worth doing and budget can be what you make it, I've taken a year off but having just watched the latest DVD I'm already signing up again, it's gumball for the normal person

Just my thoughts

Sorry, are you the guy running it? Your name implies that you are but your post seems intended to present you as independent....

Does all of that £500 go to the charity, or does any of it go towards expenses?

Thanks for the info. How quickly do the spots sell out? It'll more than likely be another couple of weeks before we register.

In regards to a vehicle, what do you recommend? I've been looking at the odd Volvo estate, dont know if that would be too boring though. I think the biggest problem would be insurance as we both insure our own cars at the moment, and we're both fairly young. Would it be better just going through a temporary insurer nearer the time to just cover us for a week? I'd probably sell the car on afterwards and recoup as much as possible.

All the money the teams raise goes directly to the charity who collect this at the launch night or afterwards. There are 10 spaces out of the 100 available this year, we took 120 last year due to different ferry sponsor.

Any car with 2 litre or more is fine and we are one of the few banger rallies actually endorsed by HIC insurance who will provide you with short term cover for the rally and rally is specified so it's all above board. I'd opt for BMW or Merc as they are reliable

This came to light as a stag do idea for me next year but I think it will be too costly for people. Maybe the year after though, it sounds like my cup of tea!

No, it all goes to the nominated charity. You cant expect people to pay for your fun in the name of charity.

Tell me about it- Loads of posters have gone up at work advertising events, cake sales etc sponsoring two women to do a "350km cycle challenge across India". Cycle challenge my arse, I'm not donating money so those two can have a free holiday! Challenge my arse.

I wasnt banned: Ed & Chris were very understanding. I actually turned up without any sponsorship at all: as everything I had was tied to the Porsche - when that failed the sponsorship went with it.

It was extremely embarrassing turning up with nowt, I can tell you. As a result I think that rules regarding sponsorship were firmed-up, making the minimum amount (of £500) a compulsary requirement.

Im not sure that it costs up to £800 per person as one of the other posters suggested. Id expect to use about 100 gallons of fuel and even at todays price that only cost £600 between the two of us, whilst most teams have more than two members. Camping is included in the fee with Scumball too, unlike the other raliies that I looked at (in 2009, when it sold out before Id paid).

Ive got the DVDs for Scumball'07 and Scumball'08 and Id suggest that anyone interested watches the 2007 DVD, because I think that this a far more representitive view of the event; failed doughnuts aside.

Im not sure that it is Ed White - when you join you can use anyones name.

Why say that 'I heard that you were banned', which wasnt true; if you were the person whod have actually made that decision?

I doubt too that Ed would join using one of the original entrants, and first years winners, team names.
