Narrowed down my search to these 2 finalists.

Will have a towbar fitted, will be used in inclement weather, will be my only road car but not used for commuting.

Porsche 944 S2

or

Alfa GTV6 Cup.

Similar price, similar outputs, similar weight. Both can be supercharged for 300odd bhp.

Which would you choose and why?

944 for me. I quite like them and definitely prefer them to the Alfas.

Very scientific that!! hehe

Good luck with supercharging either.

Anyhoo, moving on - Cup - no need. If you're that way inclined get a V6 with the Aerokit and Teledials. There's feck all on the Cup worthy of the extra dollars. The Alfa engine is a peach and despite having gobs of power and torque it still manages to get round corners with prodigious speed. However you do know it is FWD at all times - that bothered me.

944/968 - drive one first. I drove a few and I don't think I found a proper good 'un as they were pretty agricultural (relatively speaking) and I wasn't impressed. I later went on to buy a Boxster. The 968 engine is properly dull compared to the Alfa V6 so ask yourself some questions about what you want from a car, because frankly I don't see the two in the same segment/category.

bks. My 166 had 160000 miles on it and still starts first time everytime with the bloke I sold it too. They are bulletproof if maintained correctly and run on the right oil with cambelt changes on time. Also you will find that you can supercharged it happily as autodelta have been doing for years. Wish people would stop spouting the same old st when it comes to Alfa reliability.

Funny. Every time there's an oily spannerhead who comes out of the woodwork and defends the indefensible.

Nothing wrong with liking Alfas- just don't pretend that as a marque they're anything but below average in terms of reliability. You may have had a good experience. The average suggests a lower then acceptable number of people do overall with the marque.

In answer to the OP- I'd take the Alfa.

I have an Alfa and its been bulletproof. Oh wait... That's not quite true is it. Truth is its cost me quite a bit to keep going, but it's been worth it. I love my 156.

OP I'd get the Alfa, but then I'm a bit biased.

The V6 is bulletproof - the wishbones are consumables. That's about all you need to know about the GTV.

I know 10PS and perhaps it's too many beers for which I apologise. I know a great many people who have had great experiences with ALFA and who have had bad experiences with Porsche as well as great. My brother I'm laws 944 is a rusty heap whereas my 924 S was perfect. My advice to the OP would be to look at both and see what fits best for you. I will have a GTV cup one day but I have no hankering for any Porsche save a 356 that I can't fit into or a 993 Turbo. There are good and bad across all manufacturers. Good luck with getting sorted. smile

I'd always choose a Porsche over an Alfa Romeo... however the GTV6, and especially the Cup, make me go all wobbly at the knees - they're beautiful... so that'd be a bit of a dilemma!

I prefer the 944 but if your gonna use it over winter and knowing where you are and what last winter was like the fwd would work better. My neighbour had a 335 diesel and nearly attacked it with a shovel last winter as it was hopeless. I don't think his 19" rims helped though...lol

Wrong - Typical pub talk.

JD Power Germany -"Audi and BMW also fell behind arch rival Mercedes-Benz, which tied for second with Alfa Romeo." Let alone the thousands of owners who have actually owned them but having said that the GTV is a little more picky than Alfa's of the generation.

Things like the aerial coil in the steering shroud wears after 9 years but only costs £15 to replace, but as mentioned above the engines are bullet proof and generally just the suspension components need replacing (but even then the rear bushes on the V6 are rose jointed and quite durable).

I have driven a 944 S2 and owned a GTV V6.

944 - Competent, strong engine but lacking in character, looks dated to me
GTV V6 - Passive rear wheel steer, steering lacks sharpness of GT/156 generation - but imagine a baby Ferrari with that engine and the stunning interior.

GTV V6 for me every time but the 944 does win in terms of absolute driving ability but it will never take your heart.

You've got a German satisfaction survey against years and years of surveys and reliability indexes and experience from owners all over the world saying the opposite.

Oh yes, pub talk. Everyone in the 'pub' you speak of has an irrational and unexplained hatred of Alfa, don't they. In case you can't tell, I am being sarcastic.
