I'm half-way through this month's evo and was reading the current report on their RS5. Apparently the RS5's engine takes 20 litres of oil!

Now we are only talking about a 4.2 litre V8, right? Broadly the same block as in the lesser S5, which stats say takes 10.7 litres of engine oil, which would translate to an oil change of c.10 litres. And which my mental arithmetic says sounds about right, perhaps a little high for a V-engine'd car of that capacity.

So, did the evo guys get robbed blind, did they get another car serviced for free and just hid the cost, or does the RS5 engine really take 20 litres of oil???

It's not uncommon for a dry sumped engine or one fitted with an anti-aeration tank to have double the oil capacity of a wet sump- add oil coolers, turbo oil lines etc and you can really increase that capacity. 20 litres is a lot but possibly not as far fetched as you might think.

Wow! My Superleggera only takes 10, that's a V10 dry sump...

It does (apparently) hold 21 litres of coolant though! eek

a 4.8 litre Ferrari V12 from the 70's/80's takes a little more than that, maybe the Audi has a larger than normal oil cooler and pipework to fill

I'm faily sure my RS4 takes just over 9 litres - so unless something has changed radically it sounds way high?

I was watching something on discovery the other day about the VW factories. They have a dry sump to lower the centre of gavity. Dont know what it was called but they had a massive oil tank that seems to go the full width of the car.

Actual capacities seem to mean nothing when it comes to dealers though... one car I had, 3 different dealers claim to have used different (by 30% min --> max) amounts of oil for routine changes.

Cheers Marf - did a quick google myself but only found the S5 stats posted originally.

So we're concluding that the evo boys either got ripped off or someone's put a second car through on the one bill then?!?

(BTW - my 3.0 V6 only takes c.5 litres on a change, and total book capacity is <6 litres, so even 11.4 is pretty high for an engine with only 40% greater swept volume...but then if it's dry-sumped that would make some sense)

PS - to the "WTF" posters (who I can empathise with, if I hadn't seen it myself), go look at the photo of the bill in the magazine, it says 20x Castrol Edge at £6.00 each (plus VAT). Which sounds more like a price-per-litre than a price per pint/500ml. Unless Audi are charging their customers premium prices for consumables as well as for everything else... biggrin
