I recently picked up a brand new car from bmw nothing that's going to set the world on fire its only a 320d coupe but it looks nice and goes well for a diesel but anyway my friends are all like man i would clean and polish it every other day wouldn't let anybody smoke in it etc etc. i notice there are a hell of a lot of people like this who spend a fortune on cleaning products and cant sleep at night if there is a spec of dirt on the car etc.

Why dont i feel like this? Don't get me wrong i look after my cars, i give it a wash and a clean when i feel it needs it but in my eyes a car isnt going to look as perfect as it did before it left the showroom every single day a car is ment to be used its just not practice to keep it looking perfect 24/7, i feel as tho im getting old or loosing enthusiasm or something because when i was 18 and got my 1st car i was the total opposite im only 26 and i just really dont have the enthusiasm to want to keep my car looking immaculate all the time, in my eyes its a brand new 3 series coupe it looks pretty dam amazing when its slightly dirty anyway.

To be honest i kind of envy the enthusiasm other people have even tho im not bothered about keeping it super clean i kind of wish i was because other people seem to get loads of enjoyment from it.

Am i just borning and dull or do somepeople just have ocd when it comes to cleaning?

I don't have the polishing obsession either, bought my motorbike brand new in March, done almost 4000miles on it now and I've only washed it once.

I have quite a bit of cleaning parafinalia to keep the outside nice. Shampoo, polish, bumper care, wheel cleaner, wheel sealent, bug remover and T-cut for the scratches, all of which is auto glym (bar T-cut) but I have bought it over a peroid of time when I've felt like a need a certain agent. I won't be buying any more for a while as it's stock piled into quite enough for now! I wash the car once every 2/3 weeks and I don't mind if it gets mucky, but I do like it clean. I do like it filthy after a good hoon too.

The inside I do like to be really nice. I vac it probably onec a week and don't leave rubbish in it. I give the dash a wipe to get rid of dust once a month or so.

So I'm not too bad, but I do like it looking nice. No where near some of the detailers on PH. The car is black though so after a week it looks very dirty, and water marks show up badly. The car, a Puma with rusty arches (now they really annoy me, but it's a lot of money to set them right!)

I'd pour pickled cabbage and scrape stones over it for free.

i clened mine 3 times a week when it was on the road, its been off the road 6 months now and iv claybarred it, gave it a machine polish and cleaned it a fair few times! and its in dry storage. i just feel good about having a clean car, and yes i think its an OCD thing, since i take my wheels off when i clean my car to make sure its spotless!

£2 a pop that's cheap.

Everywhere around here advertise car wash from £5 although the nice man at the local 'Shiny' hand car wash near me washes actually inside the alloys and waxes it for me for £5 biggrin

Some days I would wash my old car twice a day.

The paint was immaculate on it and there was so many layers of wax on it the dirt would usually just rinse off with a hose, itd take maybe 10 minutes to wash and dry and another 15 to put another layer of wax on, clean the windows/lights and dress the tyres.

It was always immaculate, I watched it in the snow and at night.

The BMW I have now is too far gone so I dont care and it gets washed sometimes.

Being a 320d, it a company car? I'd guess you'd care more if it was your own.

I suspect the obsessive cleaning thing is about satisfying an urge to do something to the car that doesn't require much in the way of knowledge or skill. Concours beards aside, I doubt there are many people who own both a clay bar and a set of valve spring compressors.

I wash mine whenever it looks like it needs a shining up again, I even tried to wash my Fiesta in the snow once, hose was iced up so I did it with buckets of water, which then froze onto the car. At least it was clean, but it was also an ice cube by the time I was finished. I still take some hot water and wheel cleaner to the my wheels in winter just to stop brake dust / oil / crap build up, and I give the arches a good scrub with some generic Turtlewax shampoo to stop excess salt build up.

I'd like to start claying and waxing my car, but I suppose I will have to wait until next summer now, since there will scarcely be chances for me to get learning now the weather is rubbish. My Type R was waxed the day I got it, it looked absolutely stunning and I'd like to keep it like that as much as possible.

Does anyone remember that Astra VXR Nurburgring Edition detailing thread? The blokes in that were proper sad gits. "The paint on this panel was a few microns thinner than the rest, and there was a pin-prick sized black dot imperfection on the roof, for these reasons I was considering rejecting the car" lmao.

@eggman

i may be a rare breed then, i rebuilt my engine myself, including lightening and balancing the bottom end, and as above, i lean my car like a we.

but between my group of friends, i cant think of one single person who's the same, theyre either looks/cleaning wes or theyre the 'hands dirty' type

Have you seen the thread where he has a crap, then he takes 120 photos of himself claybarring his ringpiece.

Does he then put 51 layers of moisturiser on his skin after he washes his hands?
