Anyone park an upmarket car in the street every night?
Discussion
Thinking of buying a Merc SL (~2004 folding hard-top model). Can I park this in the street? Unfortunately I have no choice but to park it in our cul-de-sac (in town). The road is not too bad. It has cars parked on both sides and is too narrow for two cars at a time to travel down in different directions, but is perfectly spacious enough for one car at a time.
Mine would be nearly the most expensive and certainly most exotic car in the street, only a BMW Z4, a new Insignia and newish Passat will be close, the rest are regular family cars. Now, touch wood no cars have been damaged here since moving a year ago, which is promising. But, in my last house I did get cars damaged 3 times - twice keyed. But that road was busier than where I live now. Things seem better where I am now, the neighbours are friendly and there don't appear to be any kids and no non-residents have any reason to wander past.
So does anyone think I should buy the car anyway and risk it? You only live once and I do really love this car. I have no reason to think it won't be fine except paranoia and my past experiences elsewhere. Should I fit some sort of protective things to the car, can you get them!?
Or is this is a terrible idea? I wonder because a Merc SL is not the kind of car you ever see parked in the road. It's quite wide so will stick out, it's low and hard to see especially in a 4x4, it's not subtle and it does attract attention. It is probably expensive to repair if something happens as well. Most panels are aluminium. I am planning to only lower the roof once I have left my road, just to avoid attention. Am I being too paranoid!?
Thoughts either way please..

i dont think it will be an issue as long as you park it tight to kerb and the mirrors are folded in.
people will only damage it if silly parked and they hit it accidently or if you are blocking them in and they are aholes that like to take a key to the car.
as you said, not a bad road
its not going to have any real traffic as its a dead end road
100% no chance of getting it off the road ?

Don't let your possessions possess you, as they say.
If I were you I'd mentally put £2000 aside for repairing potential vandalism, and if nothing has happened to it by the time you come to sell it, treat your self to a lovely ice cream.
It all comes down to money at the end of the day, and if it got scratched it's not the end of the world. Don't worry about it

Yep.
All manner of PH test cars are parked on my street in London SW14. Tight to kerb, fold mirrors in and no bother. That said, everyone parks on the road around here so 'my' £100k test car will be nestled amongst other fine machines.
I think you'll be fine, but I keep my own TVR in a rented garage

I will consider poking around locally and see if anyone in a nearby road has got a spare garage or driveway or something, the disadvantage being that it would be out of my sight then. Apart from that I believe there's no hope but I will take suggestions. My house is a terraced 1930s house, door opening straight onto a small pavement by the street and its the same for the entire road. No garden, just a small patio area that is enclosed by 2 neighbours gardens so there's no access from the rear to that either. There is a guy with a 997 911 turbo who parks his car on a busy, tight street in godalming that 100's of students / school buses drive past everyday and is annoyinly narrow and tight in places (i had the mirror knocked off my old 306 when driving up there a few years ago). He's a braver man then me!
