Where is the best place for a PHer to live ? - Both in terms of driving AND maintenance of your vehicle

I currently live in North Devon, which is great from the driving angle, but pitiful from the maintenance angle.

I've lived in the midlands, loads of decent garages and tuners, but too many people, police and (imho) lack of decent empty roads.

Folks have any thoughts ?

Somewhere in northern Italy I reckon. A nation of car lovers overlooked by Alpine passes.

I honestly reckon the USA, such a diverse place in all respects;
- Despite the misconceptions there's curly roads all over the place, and the ones I've rooted out and enjoyed have been amazing, and quiet.
- Arrow straight highways for when you just want to get where you're going. OK the traffic can be manic on some of them, but by and large they're great.
- A proper dyed in the wool nation of petrol-heads
- Lots of car shows and exhibitions, museums, meetings, clubs etc.
- Broad spectrum of interests, more so than anywhere else I've ever been - from big pick ups and off roaders, to muscle cars, classics yank tanks, bikes, euro cars, JDM etc, each with their own little facets and groups and social circles.
- Plenty of places to actually do stuff, whether it be off roading, drag racing, drifting, track days etc. Perks of having quite a lot of land I suppose.
- Huge tuning industry, and a great engineering heritage
- Massive selection of motorsports at grassroots, local and national levels, and it seems relatively easy to get involved in

Lots more I could add to the list.

In the UK, I'm inclined to say the north west purely on the basis that you've got Cumbria / Lake District which is packed full of amazing roads when the tourists aren't blocking them.

Derbyshire. Loads of amazing roads, villages, pubs, friendly people, plenty of indie garages, classic car scene, good mix of vehicles/weather conditions, etc.

I would agree with you 100% until they introduce all those 50mph limits and plod hiding in the trees on the snake pass, at three locations at the same time frown oh and don't even get me started on the cat & fiddle road , sigh !

There are good roads in Kent, but you often have to drive miles on crap or boring roads to get to them.

Kent, definitely. Brands Hatch and Lydden in the county, close to Eurotunnel/Dover for the Le Mans/'Ring trips, some excellent driving roads, plenty of decent garages (particularly specialists), lots of exotica on the roads, excellent Karting tracks (Buckmore etc), as far away as possible from Wales.

I am aware that the last point is subjective hehe

Northeast Lincolnshire. Cadwell and Blyton nearby. Great roads, not many people and not too far from all those garages in the Midlands and South Yorks. Plus some great beaches, just avoid the resorts! Plus dry weather relative to most of the UK.

I'm quite happy in the part of Hampshire I'm living in!
Lots of good hooning roads.
Hindhead tunnel.
Goodwood
Brooklands (vis the above mentioned tunnel)
I work opposite a good mechanic with TVR experience (and, indeed, a TVR).
APM is 10 minutes from work.
Fernhurst Autos ten minutes away.
Liphook coachworks
Southways automotive
Close to the Ferries for France (LeMans)

Suits me fine!
