Simple question brought on by seeing both of these on my way home from work.

10K to spend, would you buy a Monaro/VXR8 or a E39 M5?

Personally for me, head says Monaro, heart says M5.

Whichever one I went for I'd leave plenty of the budget to go towards an LPG conversion.

Both look equally mean, but would rather M5's class over Monaro's brutishness.

Well, you wont get a VXR8 for £10k. If you can get a Monaro with some choice upgrades it would be good fun. E39 M5 is all good if you can find a good unmolested example, but if you don't it will be a liability. M5 will cost far more to run than the Monaro.

Strange, for me that'd be the other way round. Big dumb Aussie bruiser against clinical German instrument of driving...

Monaro for me every time. I've no doubt the BMW is better in pretty much every measurable way, but I just prefer the idea of the Holden. Continuing the leftfield streak, I'd probably take an MG ZT 260 (and a big pot of change) over either.

I've owned both in the past, both great drives but i enjoyed the driving experience of the M5 the most.

I'm a huge BMW fan BUT, I'd save another 2K and get a 6.0 Monaro, they look so much better an obviously have that wee bit more poke.

Ive had both monaro vxr and E39 M5, M5 was better at everything imo.

I'd vote for a Monaro if it's for fun. I tried an M5 and was very impressed but it's all too efficient, and I understand they can hit you with some huge bills. Whereas a 10K Monaro will be more of an unglorified muscle car, will be something like half the age of the M5, and should be relatively risk free.

you realise just how many miles you have to do for it to make financial sense don't you?

My ex was under the impression that if she changed her x5 diesel to the Cayenne turbo I suggested that it would cost be financial suicide....

when I showed her that it would only cost her a few hundred quid a year she just wouldn't believe me!

I had to show her the actual math! on a piece of paper!

her guess was £10k....

Not for a while chum, priorities for the next few years are (apparently sensibly) property and family based. Besides I already have a 8 cylinder in my life to keep me sane. Just.

What is 'the' thread that you speak of?

Indeed.

hehe

I loved the last Vmax when he drove mine (comparing brake feel - 'they all do that mister') and he got out of mine with a bit of a scowl on*

Next time I'm just telling him its a 50ker.

*Although he often looks like that. Must be all the fecked cars he's had made him that way.
