New car, Keen to drive it, No tax disc.....
Discussion
Just bought a car from a home based dealer yesterday. Car didn't unfortunately have any tax, but has a valid MOT and I've just arranged the insurance on it.
Am I right in saying that there is no way that I can drive the car until the dealer sends of the v5 change of owner slip, and I get a new log book delivered to me? Seems a bit crap as I'm happy to dish out the dollar for the disc right now and waned to take the sprogs out in it over the weekend

Unless things have changed recently you should be able to tax it in person with the 'new keeper suppliment' tear off from the existing V5.
No need to wait for a whole new V5.
Ahh....I appear to lack the suppliment! The dealer said he was going to send off something for me and I had to send off the slip from my old car which I p/x'd in for the new one.No need to wait for a whole new V5.
Would the bit that he's sent off be the suppliment, or is that entirely separate?
I've not done a PX before so was letting the dealer take the lead.
The new keeper suppliment is part of the V5. Its perforated so designed to be torn off.
The rest of the V5 is sent off to the DVLA.
Quite surprised the dealer didn't give you this and request the same from the V5 on the car you p/xed.
You might be able to get it off him if its not yet been posted.
Trust you have a receipt.

Indeed I do have a receipt, it's written on a Subway napkin - will that be OK?The rest of the V5 is sent off to the DVLA.

OK I'll call him after work and see if he's still got it so that I can go and pick it up.

No need to wait for a whole new V5.
Correct. You can't do it online, but last time I looked you could do it at a post office if you had the new keeper supplement. No need to wait for a whole new V5.
If you don't have the new keeper supplement, it's debatable whether you actually own the car...
Hmm I just checked the tax status on the DVLA's website and got:
Date of Liability 01 02 2012
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Seems to be indicating that it is taxed up until feb 2012. I'm still going to go to the dealer and try to get the new keeper slip if he hasn't sent it off already, but does the above give me some flexibility to use the car (despite not having the disc)?

Yep, I did it last week when I realised I'd never recieved the V5 for the bike. New keeper supliment, insurance, and MoT if it's over 3 years old.kambites said:

ETA his receipt is proof he is the new owner.
OOOPsss. Sorry, lets start again.

No valid tax disc in the window means 3 points for failure to display.
Since when?Direct Govt said:
A current tax disc must be displayed on the vehicle it was bought for. If you buy a new tax disc before your current tax disc expires, you should not display the new one until the old one has expired. The new tax disc is only valid from the first day of the month you have taxed from. The maximum penalty for failure to display a current tax disc is £200. The tax disc can not be transferred between vehicles.

As far as I can tell theres nothing stopping you taking out a second tax disc if you cant find the original. What happens if you do it online?
Tax discs are registered to the car or not the owner or keeper which is why you dont need to change them at purchase time
However the forms are contrived to stop you buying one if you dont have the log book

Here's what google turned up about someone who tried to tax without the log book but gave up too easily
