Why is it unbelievably expensive?
My stepson who is 17 is getting quotes of over 4K for 3rd party only on a 2K car with insurnace group 1!
What chance does he have of getting on the road?

Ride a bicycle until he is 21?

Glad I am a grumpy old git, at least for insurance purposes!

Have a look at an Admiral Multi-car policy.

Very good indeed, will soon see how good in 2 weeks when I get quotes for my next car.

My first year was very cheap with modifications, infact it was half what a mate paid for a 1.2 Corsa Third party fire and theft whereas I was fully comp.

Because, as a general rule, they're rubbish drivers.

Thats what i did now im getting quotes for insurance group 17 @ £1200!

but yes it is crazy maybe try named driver unless you want him to gain some NCB? also put yourself/any female family members as named driver should knock it down a bit.

When you was 17, how bad a driver were you?

When I was 17 I probably drove a bit quicker than i should have but I would not say i was rubbish.

I was rubbish. Better than some, worse than others, but still rubbish.

I drove too fast; my car control was poor; my ability to read the road was non-existent;...

Yes, I will try my wife as a named driver and see if that helps.

I've been quoted for c.£2400 on my corsa 1.0.It's closer to 1k on provisional so I'm driving like that for now. When I pass,I'm looking into a Herald 13/60 as I got a quote for £1500 which is good for a 17 year old.

It is unfortunate that the insurance companies dont personally know your step son, as obviously they would reduce the rate. However the price of insurance for youngsters is high for a reason .... as a consequence I cycled everywhere until 22 and purchased my first shed. (that was 1996 too and managed to get a quote at about £600.)

As others have said, putting older females on the policy can help, putting car on a driveway, increasing excess, insuring fully comp rather than TPFT, picking a car which is not 'normally' driven by youngsters (ie a Morris Minor rather than a Saxo/ corsa/ fiesta) may all benefit the premium.

A colleague at work was going through these hoops a few weeks back and homed in on cheap 70's cars (Beetle, escort, herald etc) as being optimal for insurance costs. Wandering into the 80's wasn't too bad (early Panda for example) but anything newer bumped up the premium. Classic mini was also a good bet.

I'm only 24. backwhen I was 18 a friend of mine managed to insure a 1.4litre 6n polo for £25000. Back then it was high, but i think that car is about IG7/8. £4000 for an IG1 today is crazy.

biggrin

I'd consider paying to not drive that!

On a serious note, insurance is a bh...I couldn't wait to get quotes after my 25th birthday,I thought the prices would come down significantly,oh how wrong was I!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

My step son is 19 and was getting the same high quotes on corsas, 206s etc all around 4-5k. He changed tactic and started looking at stuff most teenagers don't bother with and got a quote of 2k on a 2000 Merc C class.
