Which 2+2 coupe 5-8k ? 350Z, DC5 what else??
Discussion
As per the title, I'm looking to change my car after a few years of e39 goodness - it's time to get a coupe.
I don't fancy the idea of ruinous bills particularly hence the removing the Porka 996 and tvrs from my wanted list.
One thing is that I am completely full of indecision and I want PH to make up my mind for me...
I've had good experiences with Hondas and never owned a turbo car, hence the reason for looking at the 350Z. Somehow trying to tick every box is a bit dumb but some kind of compromise between the following would be good -
running costs (servicing etc), fuel, I'm guessing depreciation is not such a big issue at this price point
I'd like a 2 seater (possibly s2000) but a tiny bit of practicality would be useful

Jag XKR £7k

Make sure it's had the 3rd generation tensioners fitted, budget for a gearbox oil change if it's not had one and you shouldn't have any major problems.
Lots of potential modifications you can do to them for extra performance should the desire arise.

That's a huge amount of car for the money!

Both under 100k miles with FSH. Of the price difference between them, you're paying more for the fact one has the 19" wheels than it being a year younger. General school of thought is that they look better on the 19s, but drive better on the 18s.

No rear seats in 350z or turbo.
S2000 is fantastic fun for the cash, but I'm biased.
Personally I wouldnt want to put cash into an m3 that old, you'll want to make sure you have some spare funds as an m3 isnt going to be cheap to run.
Sounds like you really need to decide what type of car you need/want first.

The Jag is lovely but maybe a bit too wafty for my needs - not to mention (I'm assuming) the potential for big bills.
M3 would certainly do it but again, Shirley M servicing can't be classed as reasonable?
How would running costs compare on these cars? I'm assuming the DC5 would be significantly better given the relative simplicity and lack of electronic trickery underneath.

Well I have no strict criteria, 4 seats would be better than two simply for a little practicality. After that, the main things would be reliability and 'reasonable' running costs - I'd like to think that something that could achieve over 30 mpg on a run would be nice. The dc5 ticks all of those boxes but there's something inside me that tells me I'd want more oomph as I had a dc2 for quite a while. It does have the benefit of fairly strong residual value too.
Well again then I'd say the s2000 ticks the box, bargain to run, one of the most reliable cars out there and fun to be had by the bag load. It won't be a huge amount quicker than the dc2 but it is, however you won't want to chuck t around like you can a dc2 unless you are mr stig.
Only draw backs are cramped interior and high insurance premiums. People complain about gutless engines but coming from a dc2 you obviously understand vtec and know the pros and cons. If driven sensibly 30mpg+ is possible however mixed driving expect to see 27mpg, at current prices it's about 275-300miles per £60 tank.
Another option is a Z4 3.0i, pretty nippy and a lot of car for the money, not as fun as an s2000 but a more refined motor overall. Pick up a good 2004 example for £8k.
I hate to recommend an rx8 as they can be a minefield, but again value for money it's unbeatable and will happily seat 4. The car will be cheaper to buy but youll spend what you saved on keeping the thing on the road!!

and prices are now holding reasonably strongly, especially compared with the equivalent XJ. You're not going to see XKRs selling for <5k (v ropey examples aside) any time soon imho.
