I love noisy diesel engines. I like that knocking rattly sound (obviously of a healthy one) and, well, it just sounds so manly.

I hate the way manufacturers are trying to make them more silent frown

Might not be that modern but in terms of the car being circa 100 years old I class something from the late 80's / earlier 90's as modern enough - anyway to me you can't beat the vw straight 6 for diesel clatter - even better with a massive holset turbocharger like this one:

Depends what constitutes modern. Theres a Jag X-type diesel down the road i can always hear coming a mile off. Noisier than most vans.

Ford Connect. It sounds like a tractor on idle, and never sounds smooth or quiet. It's a ghastly sounding thing.

yes despite fitting a new exhaust to mine it still outputs an aural cacophony that bears greater resemblance to a tractor than a van. Being n/a, it produces a similar pace on the open road as well.

Admittedly mine is an older caddy, so whether or not that counts as modern I don't know.

Not exactly too modern, but the cold combustion clatter on my neighbours TD5 Disco 2 is epic !! ;-)

I just got a Chevy Cruze and it says 2.0 VCDI on the keyring, got a shock when I started it with the window open, also got a shock when I booted it up a hill, more guts than most hire cars shame it doesnt like corners.
