Looking through the classifieds I spotted a porsche 944 turbo S silver rose edition. The car is immaculate and a real collectors item it got me thinking of loans and all the rest. The main stumbling block for me is always insurance.

I am 24 on the 26th and will have 4 years no claims but 4 years ago I got a drink driving charge which doesn't ever help. Right now the quote would be about 2K which was better than I expected. However I know that insurance goes down at 25. I checked what it would be if I were 25 at which point I'll have 5 years no claims (hopefully) plus it'll be 5 years since my conviction and whilst I realise I'm still supposed to declare it, the insurance websites only ask whether I've had a conviction in the past 5 years which I won't. So I say I don't, it's true so why not.

The difference was unbelievable! from £2094 to £594! I knew the difference would be quite a lot but that blew me away for once I wan't to be older.

Has anyone else noticed as extreme a difference in their quotes?

When I turned 21 the insurance on my Focus went from £1200 to just over £600.

Another car, price increases and a 'higher risk' area have put it back up to the £1000 mark though.

I too am looking forward to turning 25 in a year and a half so that I can finally get cheap insurance.

lol I know that's what my dad said but for £1500 I'd quite happily wish away a year.

Just for reference, when I turned 25, the insurance renewal came in.. £200 more expensive. In the end I paid around £15 less than the year before.

Just be careful, if you need to disclose your driving history then do it. Hiding a DD charge will not do you any favours if the worst happens. What's the rule on this? Are you obliged to declare it up to 10 years or something?

Although if u were 25 now it'd be that price I bet it won't be when u actually reach 25. Has always been that way for me. Wanted performance cars since 21. 27 now and still pretty much the same price.

Yep 10 years if I remember correctly and insurers leave it up to you to know that (you would have been told on conviction) so they can screw you if you don't mention it even if their question is about five years!

Yeah that's the one!

It's actually 11 years a DD stays on the license, strange number I know but that's the way it is. I know that I'd more than likely not get away with it but I wouldn't be lying.

It's all a bit of a moot point anyway, I can't make myself older and I'll not legitimately get rid of the charge until after 11 years have passed. It's nice to dream about cheap insurance for once though.

The 25yo thing with regards insurance is a myth im afraid. Insurance companies do not just automatically lower the price of insurance available to you on your 25th Birthday.

Same here, my renewal was more than last year and nobody else was massively cheaper either. frown

How would you explain the quote? Bear in mind I also checked what the price would be if I'd never had the DD and was 24, it came back as £1400 the only factor that changed for the £594 quote was one years more no claims and being 25.
