The wife is really happy with her new car as it takes 50 pound to fill the tank where as the old one took 70 to fill the tank.

The new one does 270miles to a tank the old one 500 miles.

So new one does way less MPG but it doesn't feel so bad as the tank is cheaper to fill.

The other week we had a RR owner saying how economical is range rover was as it had a huge range despite the tank being HUGE.

So what gives a better feeling of economy

A long range or a cheap to fill fuel tank?

I think it depends on the numbers. The Elise always feels more efficient than it is because the tank only takes 40 quid's worth of fuel yet I still only fill it up every three weeks or something, so I tend to have forgotten when I last filled it by the time I need to do so again. If I was driving a more serious mileage, I think having to fill it up every couple of days would grate despite the actual fill-ups being fairly cheap.

I do vaguely calculate my economy though, so I selected that option. smile

I think proof reading your poll options gives a better feeling of economy.

Big tank full of diesel for me. Okay it's ~£85, But it'll be over two weeks before I have to fill it up again.

Only putting £20-30 in the tank every time you fill up. You go a shorter distance each time but it still feels like your motoring costs remain constant.

I've just increased it from ten shillings.

I voted for long range with a huge tank, because you don't see the petrol station that often, which gives the impression the fuel is lasting. Even if the reality is you are using a fair bit more than an economy car. Notice how many manufacturers have started putting the range in their adverts, even though a) very few are likely to achieve it because you have to average a very high figure for a very very long way and b) it's easier to disguise a less-economical car by quoting range and giving it a massive fuel tank to compensate.

Personally, I like a small tank with long range. My old 1.1 106 did 550 miles on a 10 gallon tank.

Bigger tank. My fabia VRS holds 55 litres of diesel and gives 550-600 miles a tank

The expansion tank mod allowed me to probably fill 1-2 times a month.

Hi

I work it out. But a big tank to fill up hurts and a small tank is just annoying with having to fill up too often.

All the best

I very occasionally fill the 350Z up - it's the wife's daily driver, so I only tend to fill it if we're away for a weekend somewhere. It has a massive tank and requires super unleaded, resulting in an eyewatering bill.

I've an iphone app that tracks the Elise's fuel consumption. I could basically replace it with a screen shot showing 30mpg.

I'd rather have a bigger tank but I wonder whether the extra weight of a full tank of fuel is counter proactive to good fuel economy

My Mum's still in the 'Just stick a tenner in' club, I'm more run it to just under an eigth of a tank, then brim it

I saw an advert the other week about the new Passat, saying it can get over 1000 miles on a tank. Imagine only going to the petrol station ten times a year!

I'm a sad got who calculates his mpg. To 2 s.f.

Standard 55 liter tank, fill up when the lights on (45-48l used) anywhere between 300 and 400 miles range depending on type of driving. Averaging 35 atm.

Though I did like the feeling of my old
Skoda which had a bigger tank and was diesel. 650 mile range, fill up
Every 2 weeks but it did cost a lot to fill.

2sf isn't much, that's only to the nearest mile per gallon. Admittedly your odometer probably isn't accurate enough to get any more accurate than that anyway.

Big tank, so i don't have to fill up so often.

Even the alfa's 70L isnt big enough as i still have to fill up just over every week!

Although, i think the 7 will do my head in with fuel when its on the road, as its only got a 25L tank!

Technically I calculate L/100km rather than mpg due to being metric rather than stuck in the dark ages wink. Then I have to convert it to mpg anyway to post on PH threads about fuel economy. hehe
