Hi all

just had Callum from (no sure if I can mention company name) call

C: I have buyers waiting to view your car. am I available to do a viewing?

Me: yeah sure when? I am at work at the moment but you welcome to come and see it.

C: is it a 1986 golf 2.9 litre?

Me: yes?

C: I have people specifically interest in this type of car.

Me: Ok, you understand that its not an original VW model it been modified quite a lot?

C: is it? well we have buyers interested in this kind of golf.

Me: ok great, when do they want to come view it?

C: well how we work is that. people ask us to find them a car and then we offer them finance and a warrentee on the car.

alarm bells are ringing

Me: well sounds great. I am slightly confused are you trying to sell me something or them something? I take it you charge commission to sell my car?

C: No we don't charge commission, we charge a one off fee of £100 if we sell your car. I Just need to register your car. I have enquires from 4 days ago.

Me: specifically for a 1986 350hp golf VR6 turbo, with a rollcage and big brakes?

C: yes

Me: I am sorry I just don't believe you. its quite a specialist car, and the kind on people who want one are few and far between. also they tend to be able to find the car they are looking for themselves. also back to you warrentee thing? would you offer one on my car?

C: yes we would!

Me: I am sorry no company in there right mind would underwrite a warrentee on my car. thanks for your kind offer but I am not interested in your service.

C: ok thank you sir

he must think I am a right knob. but really if he looked at the pictures he would know its not the kind of thing they deal with.

He can't see any cars, just phone numbers and credit card numbers. Ther eshould be a number you can call after these types of attempted theft to report it and track the people responsible.

Is it not legal then?

I know he cant see the pic's but someone has found my car and looked at it?

Just couldn't believe it when he said he has buyers for a vr turbo. I expect he also has buyers for the space shuttle if you ask him.

oh and the warrentee thing is still cracking me up

No it's a scam, there are no buyers and they never saw your car.

But take them to court and prove it...

A guy I worked with signed up for one of these when he was trying to sell his M3

I nearly hit him when I over heard him on the phone to the second company asking for assurances that they were legitimate as the last people ripped him off!

If i'm bored and not busy with anything, I usually try to keep them on the line as long as possible biggrin

Get them to do their whole pitch, then ask where they advertise, who their normal customer base is, if they have any cars I might be interested in.

You can go on for a while....

well he did say they only charge you if they sell. and there at the top of the google list after the ad words ones.

But I never asked if it was an up front fee. I just knew it was lies about the buyers.

I once had. a scammer that was quite good. just though she was a bit odd. anyway he wanted to use paypal I was said ok fine send the money. then I got an email from admin@paypaluk.co.uk. was very good fake, took two glances to realise. it said I had to pay the shipping agent blah blah.

anyway ignored it all then the day after got a call from the scammer saying, he was the buyers boyfriend and why had I not paid the shipping agent as the funds are not frozen in pay pal till I do. am I trying to scam him? we then had 2 days of heated email abuse most of it from me about being a Nigerian illegal immigrant an how the police will be informed. he kept up the original and the boyfriend identity's the hole time ha ha.

With the advent of the internet, thumbing through AutoTrader is a thing of the past now.

If someone wants to find your car they will.

The more specialist the more liely they are to find it too.

NEVER pay these people a bean, but I'll say that transcript was damn funny - top job OP!

Try going self employed, the scams I get by phone calls are a right laugh.

The best bits are, Mr J bloggs, you told us last year that you are interested and promiced to advertise with us this year, so can I have your card details please.laugh

I have had some bad tempered knobs shouting at me to give them my details, but that makes me laugh even more.

Tell them all to do one.

I still not that sure if I want to sell it yet. if someone make the right offer its always for sale though.

Id never pay £100 to sell a car not with the advent of the internet. or the Pen and Paper for that matter.
