Someone at my work has asked what is the product they brush around the tyres at all these hand car washes that make them shiny. Is it a specific product?

I believe it's just called "tyre blackener", there's loads of different versions. You can buy it in Halfords.

Most are a spray type stuff, the one used by valters/car washes is a paint on liquid type stuff. I always use the one our valeters use as it's much better than the stuff you can buy.

And that!

Only thing is you can't drive it immediately as it's liquid it "flings" off onto the car.

I've always found this stuff to be awful; sure, it looks great initially, but a bit of rain or muck and it runs onto the wheels and is a nightmare to clean off.

+1 The aerosol versions avoid this to some degree though.
