I want to change brake pads on my wife's car by myself because they are worn.

So will i void the "5 years warranty" which is 3 years left on the car?

Depends on the warranty. Usually it would just be the brake pads (and maybe the discs) that would be "void" but as they are consumable they probably aren't covered anyway.

Pads aren't normally covered. (some manufs do) So just change the bloody things and have done with it.

I've seen cars with 6 pot APs on and we'll still honour the warranty on the leaking thermostat. So it doesn't "generally" void the whole cars warranty. As a for instance fitting 22" rims to a Corsa might make Vauxhall reluctant to cover a knackered wheel bearing though...
