evening all!
just wondering, in the past couple of weeks, ive noticed my car hasnt been getting as hot as it used to :S
the temp gauge barely moves off 70 deg and the heaters are lukewarm,
the only difference ive made was a new radiator about 2/3 months ago, but it got upto temps fine before now
its a 306 1.9dturbo, and my communte is around 20miles and mainly nsl A & B roads!
ive covered half of my radiator with a thick plastic sheet, to try and stop the wind getting to it, reckon that will work?
any ideas on what it could be? i love my heaters and with this cold weather, im lost without them!

Run the car & then let it sit idling for a while. The temperature should then climb up to normal & the fans come on. Then drive off, do a few miles of steady driving & if the temperature starts falling then you need a new thermostat - the spring has got old & weak so it opens fine but opens too far & won't close, hence why the car is running too cool. The whole point of the T'stat is to regulate the flow of water to the radiator to maintain a constant temperature. If the spring's too old/weak then it can't close & so the temperature stays low - unless you are sat in traffic.just wondering, in the past couple of weeks, ive noticed my car hasnt been getting as hot as it used to :S

The plastic in front of the radiator is not a great idea, if you get in a traffic jam the thing will possibly overheat, even with the fans on.
Depending on where it is a T'stat can usually be changed in about an hour. You should get it fixed because it doesn't actually do the engine much good to run at low temperatures & it may also burn more fuel.
Hehe, yes an A4, but this is a V6. What a pain in the arse that was, rough steps nicked from the blog entry:

Front bumper off - fiddly.
Three million wires and hoses off the slam panel and radiator
Aforementioned off - quite heavy, actually! - except they can't come all the way off because the air con hose connects to them, so that's that assembly hanging on the left!
Typical Audi four thousand engine and belt covers off
Drive belt and pulleys off
Cam belt off - worked out it could just about stay on the crank pulley, you can see it hanging in place!
Absolutely most tightly located thermostat housing in the world wiggled out
Stat out
New thermostat O-ring which appears far too big eventually wedged into place with a screwdriver and small hammer
...Then refitting is simply the reverse of removal!
Took AGES."
By all means time it for me.. Because this took about four hours Headlights out
