Evo 8/9?

The time has come, Ive not had a car for 8 months now and have my heart set on an Evo after some surprisingly excellent insurance quotes!

I've got a budget of around £14k and I've been looking at either a 8 mr 340 or an IX.

How good are they? I'm coming from
a mk5 golf gti and found it a bit boring so want something that is a bit more of an event to drive!

What are they like to run? I'm aware they need serviced every 4.5k but, how much will it normally cost?

Any ex/owners able to give me some pointers?

I really struggled to live with mine daily, driving it was an occasion but 95% of the time I was driving to work and back so it needed to be functional but it really wasn't.
Too loud, too stiff and, believe it or not, difficult to drive slowly.

No doubt Davevo9 will be along soon to advise - my reckoning is to go for it and find a good indie for servicing. All due respect to dealers, but I think in all honesty that they tend to be a bit on the expensive side; furthermore you cannot guarantee that only the Evo specialist technicians will work on/drive your car. 8 or 9 - difficult one. My lad's 9 is a superb car, frighteningly quick and very stable on the road even in standard trim.
