Getting a car for the OH ('99 Fiesta 1.25), clutch is knackered so getting it towed straight to the garage.

The issue is, it won't physically go into gear whilst the engine's on (when it isn't running, it's fine smile). Lady got towed home from the RAC who supposedly said straight away that it was the clutch, which he confirmed after having a 'poke about'. It makes sense to me as well, engine runs sweet as a nut and goes into gear fine when it isn't running. The only clutch issue I've had before is slipping and not having any drive when 'engaged', so this is a new one on me. Any ideas what, ultimately, the fix will be? smile Or could it be more sinister than just a job of replacing the clutch...

Be careful with Aa / rac guys . My car broke down and the Aa guy said the supercharger had broken. It was towed to my friendly garage who diagnosed the problem as fuel pumps being blocked up as a result of a rusty fuel tank

What actually happens when you put your foot on the clutch pedal with the engine on?

Best diagnosis I have at the moment I'm afraid; all I've been told by the lady who previously owned it! It's its original clutch as well though, 12 years/70,000 miles...

Depresses as normal 'feel' wise. When putting it into gear though it's like trying to do it without pushing down the clutch, just grinds.

If the pedal feels normal then it probably isn't the clutch itself.

Sounds a bit like the clutch problem I had in one of my old cars, turned out to be the clutch release bearing or something to do with that end of things.

The clutch is not disengaging which is why you can't put it in gear when the engine is running. So unless the pressure plate has gone tits up or the splines are covered in crap preventing the friction plate from moving, then it will be the clutch slave cylinder that is leaking and not able to fully disengage if at all. Try bleeding it first with a pressure bleeder and check if it disengages.

Can't remember off the top of my head whether that models slave cylinder is part of the release bearing so the box has to come out to get to it or if it's mounted externally.

Chances are though it will be a box out job so you might as well replace the clutch whilst there anyway.

I also think that it's likely to be a problem with the hydraulics. If there is excessive play before any resistance is felt on the pedal, then the clutch won't work correctly.

It will be the same as trying to get it in gear without pushing the pedal right down.

Exactly. Either a minor outside problem between pedal and clutch or a major inside problem. My 50p is on the minor side - keep your fingers crossed.

Got any drips coming from the bellhousing joint underneath or is it wet with hydraulic fluid?

That's exactly what it feels like. Although I will double check tomorrow.

Cheers for all the replies, given me a slither of hope biggrin

I'll update the topic once the garage's diagnosis comes in thumbup
