No criteria - random what car - 968 Sport? Clio F1? 335i?
Discussion
Thinking of getting a weekend car on a budget. This is slightly loose as would rather spend a little more for something that won't depreciate, but similarly don't want crazy running costs!
Don't have any family to transport, have smoker for day to day use and tip runs. Drive to Northern Spain once or twice a year so something that'll be reasonable for that would be handy. Otherwise, can be 2 or 4 seats, sports, saloon or hatch, old or modern as long as it's reliable
Think I've eliminated 964s as suspect I can't really stretch to £15k that is required for a good one.
Porsche 968 Sport keeps coming up as an option. Suspect this will appreciate over the next few years, but slightly concerned about running costs.
Clio R27 F1 is very appealing as a FWD option for someone who has grown up with mainly hatches, running costs ought to be manageable but depreciation will be an issue.
335i looks good but higher budget required and depreciation still a big hit over a couple of years. Also had an E46 330 which was not particularly thrilling despite on paper being the quickest thing I've owned.
What else is there? What would you go for?

I loved my 968 and regret selling it to this day. It was very reliable and felt indestructable to me. I didn't really spend any more than I have done running any of my BMWs. I also found it quite practical for trips away, with a very useful boot area and the rear seats. A Sport would be a very good option, so much cooler than a Boxster or any modern Beemer I can think of..you need to drive a good one..
E46 M3 may be better than 335, but concerned about costs of anything with an M badge.
Love Integrales but if going for that period would rather go for something well built like the 968 as have done my share of Italian motoring! TVR has similar concerns.
Caterham not really a car for the occasional long journey.
Coming down towards a 968 but probably need to drive one.

i don't think a 968 will appreciate. 944s are down to a grand now, I think a 968 will follow it (even if the sport is a little special).
944's were made in the tens of thousands.. the 968 is a far rarer car. I can't imagine it will appreciate if you're putting miles on it, but it certainly is unlikely to lose much!I loved my 968 - running costs aren't that much - I dare say the 335d would be just as much if not more.
I would certainly have one over a modern boxster, and certainly over any of the other cars you mentioned.
A 335d is a fantastic day to day car, it's hardly special enough to be a weekend car however.

That'll be because 944s are ten a penny and made for 10 years but 968s were only made for 3-4 years. They've already been rock bottom as you could get a CS a few years ago for £7-8k but they start at £12k ish. They might not go up anymore but I don't think they'll go down again.
