r8 now or wait?
Discussion
Ive been contemplating one for a while now trying to find one as late as poss with all the extras for mid fiftys but would i be doing the right thing in terms of depreciation...yes i know but im not loaded and even if i was i dont fancy losing my shirt on one. They have been stable for a while now but with the impending facelift next year im hearing of dsg, more power from the v8 and new grille and headlights. Will this really hurt future values? where do we see prices of earley v8's ending up?
Maybe a reality check is in order for me by the pistonheads massive!
What do you think? edited to say posted in the audi forum but seems quite in there.

relatively mass produced, average brand for the price, i can only see these dropping and dropping until they get into the high twenties.
i would have thought a gallardo would be far better in terms of residuals or even a V8V for high thirties.
if you want an R8 though go for it but
1. new model next year
2. all cars about to take a kicking
i'd have thought at a rough guess that you could lose £7k per year one for a couple of years.

Cheapest one here on ph is 50k for a 4 yr old 36k miler. Since they were 75-85 new that's 5-8k year largely due to the present financial climate otherwise I suspect the market would be sitting at around 55k cheapest still as it seems to be where they were at the last 6-12 months.i would have thought a gallardo would be far better in terms of residuals or even a V8V for high thirties.

I expect the market to drop marginally across the files. No matter the car it's going to lose value in the next year or two more so than normal.
I don't see them dropping to v8v levels though as the vantage is not the same level of car performance wise.
They are also I expect cheaper to own and run making them a more popular choice thereby keeping values up.
If you wait around for depreciation you'd never make the move.
My advice is, if your hearts set on it then get it, enjoy it and stop looking at auto trader until you decide to sell it again to save yourself depression. You've already said that your looking at nearly new which is the most sensible thing to do.
Go for it!

The problem with this type of question, as has already been hinted at is that if you spend your life worrying about depreciation, you wouldn't ever buy anything.
That's not to say go and spunk your cash on a spanking car, but I think you need to be happy to work out what you can afford to lose on the car.
Obviously, if you buy a £3k car, it's not as much of a big deal if you lose the whole lot (almost impossible!), but if you buy a £55k car (and keep it for a reasonable period of time), it's not an impossibility to have lost £20k by the time you move it ( + running costs). If you can afford that, then I don't see the issue with buying.
If, on the other hand, you don't think you can stomach that, then don't buy it.
My 2p for what it's worth!
