Should we be keeping car keys in a safe? I think so.
Discussion
I've just been perusing the stolen cars thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... and 16 of them were stolen with keys after a break in (just under half the cars on the list).
I know the advice is let them take it etc, but we're making it too easy for them. If every f
ker kept keys in safes etc what are tea-leafs going to do? rape and murder everyone cos they need a stolen car? Most are skinny heroin scrotes anyway and I'm sure the punks wouldn't have the front to confront householders. Most thieves don't want confrontation. Also although one or two members of the public might get confronted / beaten, it would increase the likelihood of the scum getting caught a hundredfold (much more evidence, plus it's a more severe crime). And since most of these crimes are committed by a small number of people, once they're caught, the problem would be much reduced.
Bring it on!

"If someone broken into my house and threatened me with a weapon (knife/gun whatever) or threatened to rape my wife etc I'd let them have the keys without a fight. Take the keys and go."
yeah exactly you could still give them the keys if necessary, but there is then more evidence as you have seen and interacted with them. It will surely increase the chances of detection by a very large rate. Plus they can't drive off without you realising, so they can't slip quietly away, i.e. the police are more likely to be able to catch up with them if you can raise the alarm immediately afterwards.

Or they stab you before you've even woken up properly. yeah exactly you could still give them the keys if necessary, but there is then more evidence as you have seen and interacted with them. But if you did that they would take everything in your safe.yeah exactly you could still give them the keys if necessary, but there is then more evidence as you have seen and interacted with them. It is easy to be macho about a hypothetical robbery. Talking big is cheap.
Reality is very different. The effect of the absolute shock of a Burglary in progress cannot be predicted.
IMHO in reality virtually any sane individual faced with serious injury or serious injury to their family in the presence of burglars, would do everything to get the burglars out of their property as soon as possible.
Very occasionally the fight reaction kicks in and the Burglars receive appropriate punishment from the householder.
Talking big about this from the warmth of a fireside posting is not much help.
I just hope it never happens to you or your family, or me or my family

But these people may not be thinking straight, may be desperate for the car/cash, and probably don't have the same morals as the rest of us. And if they're committed enough to break into the house for the car, they've got the tools to break in and the motivation to take the car.
By forcing the confrontation you're drastically increasing the risk of them doing something rash/stupid. Depends if you're happy with that circumstance at 3am in the morning when you're half-naked and barely awake...and they're tooled-up!
Better answer - make your house as secure as possible, so they've got to work a lot harder to break-in. Chances are they'll pick the next house down the road.

I keep the mother of all torque wrenches in my room. If they do manage to get in for whatever reason, they'll be leaving in an ambulance. But if there is a group of them, or they are armed to the tits, then obviously its alot different and imo, just let them take the car :/ with any luck they'll crash at high speed and be killed.

And relax , think you should stop reading the daily mail . Personally , I don't know anyone that has been burgled in the last 10 years I know the advice is let them take it etc, but we're making it too easy for them. If every f

What you need is a dummy key. One that opens the doors but then deadlocks them when they try to start the car.
This can also make a call to a tracker centre where they can then call the police.
Of course there is a possibility that their human rights would have been infringed by imprisoning and causing them distress so you would end up being sued and losing your house!
