Having read the thread on securing your garage for 10k it got me wondering what people actually do to secure their car if they are going away on holidays for example.

Im not talking about your £500 box of bombs but your pride and joy. I have heard of various things that people do to ensure the safety of their car when away from home for a long period, some quite extreme!

Now I am not asking anyone to give out Info that may lead to me or others becoming suspects in the theft of their pride and joy, just a basic overview of how far people go.

Personnaly, i will leave the car near empty of fuel, disc lock, alarmed, locked garage, wifes car against the door, crook locked, no fuel, alarmed and I take all keys including spares with me so if some scumbag breaks in to the house they would have some trouble taking my TV away in the back of my own car, which seems very common with tea leaves these days!!

I have stopped short of taking the battery on holidays with me or removing the wheels and giving one to each member of my family to keep safe LOL!!

Is this extreme and are you even more careful??

If you're that frightened of leaving the car at home, how on earth do you ever dare take it out?

Good idea to hide the keys away though.

Locked garage and insurance. I don't live in fear of crime, so don't tend to worry about it too much.

Of course, the Caterham being up on stands and with no oil, and the Mustang being LHD and only just fitting down the side of the house are their own deterrents to theft hehe

Keys come with me or get hidden away in the house.
Although, frankly, if a burglar gets into the house and I'm not there the loss of my car will be quite low on the list of things to worry about.

If they try and steal the car with a lorry and winch then there's bugger all I can do really.

Certainly not afraid of leaving it at home, just don't like to give thieves an easy ride. I do consider where the car is parked when out but don't get hung up on it, its rare that it is outside anywhere over night as a rule as its my weekend toy.

I hire Mr T to babysit my house and cars, so if those crazy fools come, they get bashed with a frozen Marathon.

I used to live in a little town in Canada.

We were given a lift by a friend and were surprised when he left his keys in the ignition when we got out.
He just said it means he never loses them, and if a mate wants to borrow the car they can, just so long as they bring it back with some extra fuel.

Normally just a steering wheel lock and hide the keys away. I was due to go on a family holiday years ago however, and gave my spare key to my dad so he could "put all the spare keys in a safe place". Turned out that place was so safe that he to this day (3 or so years later) cannot remember where he put them hehe

i panic for the whole night everytime i ride the bike to my girlfriends, as its a quiet street with no lights and an alley at the end. somebody could easily just wheel it off. should probably invest in a lock..

I park mine in the car park at work (barrier entry/exit), which also has 24 hour security. And it's less than 5 mins walk to Gatwick Airport South Terminal, which is very useful... free airport parking smile

In a locked garage, car locked & alarmed and the keys inside hidden in a draw - oh and have insurance.

Hard to get to, hard to steal and hard to take away. Pretty much covers everything I need. Oddly locked in a brick garage doesnt impact the insurance because its already low where I live.

Insurance.

I do lock the garage, but that's more out of paranoia for people nicking my tools than the car.
