basically i've been quoted for a vw passat r36 @£1800 when I'm 20, now the car itself is quicker than say a standard scooby or a focus rs so why am i getting quotes of £9000 for cars that are slower? :S
also anyone think of any other nice saloons that are as quick? (don't say m3, m5 or anythings thats obviously going to be stupidly expensive to insure) cheers smile

Probably because they get less claims with that car.

You've answered your own question.

Cars like scoobies and M3's get crashed alot due to the kind of people (generally who drive them) so they are seen as high risk... R36 Passats are not crashed as often.

Because contrary to popular belief insurers consider a lot more than just 0-60 times when calculating premiums

Also they don't reckon many 20 year olds can fund an R36.. Where as they can fund a Corsa/Saxo/Impreza etc.

If i was an insurance underwriter I wouldn't touch Scoobies with a bargepole.

Insurers aren't stupid: consider the Scooby owner demographic.

Wasn't the Scooby the UK's most stolen car one year? That's probably more relevant to the insurers than the owners' demographics.

I was quoted 1300 for a 2.5 v6 Ford Cougar, but 2100 for a 1.8 156. I'm 20.

Aye, Alfa's arn't great are they. I was tempted by a 2.0TS 156 but my ZT190 was about half the insurance cost - go figure!

Oh how i laughed hard at him smile
Performance at a young age seems to be a factor though "/

It'll be done purely on statistics.
They won't be doing any thinking, no coming up with imaginary scenarios, they'll just look at the figures and see that Surabrus have more claims per car than Passats do.

Hence I use to ride around in a Alfa 166 2.5 v6 at 18.

and when looking at a M3 or a tuscan to repair. (same price. and mate that does GRP) the tuscan was £500 cheaper to make legal.

My stereotyping is nothing whatsoever to do with PH. It's very very rare indeed that I see a Scooby that hasn't got a huge fistfker exhaust, rally decals and isn't being driven by some shaven headed bloke with tattoos and a low forehead. Either that or a very council looking woman cloud9

Only ever driven in one of two modes: like a cock or bang on the speed limit in low gear.

Sorry if you don't like it, but I'm saying what I see.
